Bentley Bentayga (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Incredibly sumptuous interior | Hugely expensive |
| Smooth driving manners | High running costs |
| Capable off-road | Not as spacious in the back as you might expect |
Quick Summary
The Bentley Bentayga (2015-present) is an unmistakably luxurious SUV that commands attention on the road. With its distinctive front end reminiscent of the Continental GT and bulging bodywork, the Bentayga is a statement of opulence. The interior is exceptionally lavish, featuring leather throughout, premium wood or aluminium trim, and knurled switchgear. Available in four, five, or seven-seat configurations, it offers flexibility between exclusivity and practicality, though rear legroom is surprisingly tight for such a large vehicle. Boot space is disappointing at 382-484 litres depending on configuration.
The Bentayga delivers effortless performance across its engine range, from the efficient diesel to the powerful W12 and Speed variants. Its air suspension provides a wafting ride quality, though it cannot quite match the refinement of Bentley's coupes and saloons. Standard four-wheel drive and capable off-road credentials add to its appeal. However, running costs are substantial, with fuel economy ranging from 15-30 mpg depending on the engine, and servicing and repairs command premium prices. The timing chain design ensures longevity without costly belt replacements.
Best for: Affluent buyers seeking unparalleled luxury in an SUV, those prioritising comfort and opulence over practicality, and drivers wanting a distinctive, high-performance prestige vehicle.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned with running costs, drivers needing spacious rear seating, or those seeking maximum boot space relative to vehicle size.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bentley Bentayga | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 27.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class | 4/5 | N/A | 40.4% | 3.8/5 |
| Land Rover Range Rover | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Aston Martin DBX | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.5% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Bentayga if: You seek unparalleled luxury in an SUV, prioritise comfort and opulence, and desire a distinctive, high-performance prestige vehicle that commands attention.
Consider alternatives if: You are concerned with running costs, need spacious rear seating or maximum boot space, or prefer a more understated luxury SUV.
Competitive Position: The Bentley Bentayga stands as the pinnacle of luxury SUVs, delivering exceptional user satisfaction with a 5.0 rating. Whilst the Land Rover Range Rover offers superior overall value and practicality, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class provides better deal availability, the Bentayga excels in delivering uncompromising opulence and performance. The Aston Martin DBX matches its user rating but at a different price point. For buyers willing to invest in ultimate luxury and distinctive styling, the Bentayga remains the definitive choice, combining Bentley's trademark refinement with SUV pragmatism.
