Bentley Bentayga (2015-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Incredibly sumptuous interior	Hugely expensive
Smooth driving manners	High running costs
Capable off-road	Not as spacious in the back as you might expect

Quick Summary

The Bentley Bentayga (2015-present) is an unmistakably luxurious SUV that combines Bentley's trademark opulence with practical SUV versatility. Available with four, five, or seven seats, it features an exceptionally lavish interior with leather throughout, premium wood or aluminium trim, and knurled switchgear. The latest model includes a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an optional 1,780-watt Naim audio system. Whichever powertrain you choose—diesel, V8, W12, Speed, or plug-in hybrid—progress is effortless and exceptionally comfortable, though the air suspension can feel slightly unsettled over smaller imperfections.

Boot space is surprisingly modest for such a large vehicle, with the four-seat model offering just 382 litres and the five-seater 484 litres. Running costs are substantial, with fuel economy ranging from around 25-30 mpg for the diesel to just 15 mpg for the W12 and Speed variants. Servicing and repair costs are high, as expected with a prestige marque, though all engines feature a metal timing chain designed to last the car's lifetime. The Bentayga delivers unparalleled luxury in an SUV body, though it remains eye-wateringly expensive to purchase and maintain.

Best for: Affluent buyers seeking ultimate luxury and prestige in an SUV, those prioritising sumptuous comfort and effortless performance, and those wanting to make a bold statement on the road.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned with fuel economy or running costs, drivers prioritising rear passenger space, or those seeking the finest handling dynamics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Bentayga if: You're an affluent buyer seeking ultimate luxury and prestige in an SUV, prioritising sumptuous comfort and effortless performance, or wanting to make a bold statement on the road.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned with fuel economy or running costs, require substantial rear passenger space, prioritise the finest handling dynamics, or have budget constraints.

Competitive Position: The Bentley Bentayga stands at the pinnacle of luxury SUVs, delivering unparalleled opulence and effortless performance. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and Land Rover Range Rover offer more practical alternatives with lower running costs, the Bentayga's sumptuous interior and prestigious badge justify its premium positioning. The Aston Martin DBX matches it for luxury and user satisfaction, though the Bentayga's superior comfort and smooth driving manners make it the choice for those prioritising refinement over sportiness. For buyers unconcerned with cost, the Bentayga represents the ultimate expression of luxury SUV motoring.
