The Changan Deepal S05 is a family-sized electric SUV from an ambitious Chinese brand. It sits below the larger Deepal S07, right in the heartland of the UK’s family SUV sector, targeting rivals such as the strong-selling Skoda Elroq. Its Italian-honed design certainly helps it stand out, and the well-equipped interior is also appealing – and usefully roomy, too.

The Deepal S05 is very refined on the road, with a smooth ride that tackles most British roads with ease. It’s a bit soft when cornering as a result, but the jerky accelerator pedal may be more irritating. It isn’t as well calibrated as it could be. A 300-mile range is only average as well, although ultra-rapid DC charging capability aims to minimise the impact of this on longer trips. The Changan Deepal S05 is also competitively priced, even if insurance groups are on the high side.
