Citroën C1 (2014-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Cute and quirky looks Very small boot, even for a city car
Easy to drive and small enough to make parking a doddle A VW Up is better to drive
Funky roll-top version The Citroën's new car warranty is short compared with those offered by Hyundai and Kia

Quick Summary

The Citroën C1 (2014-2020) is a relatively basic small city car, ideal for urban runabout duties and well suited to younger drivers embarking on car ownership for the first time. Its cute and quirky design appeals to urban car owners, and there's even a quasi-convertible Airspace version with a cloth roof that rolls back to create an open-top car. Inside, it's all pretty basic with hard, shiny plastics and cloth seats, but that's understandable for a car built to a budget. The five-door version is worth the extra money over the three-door for improved practicality.

The C1 is powered by efficient three-cylinder petrol engines, with both the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre units returning in excess of 65mpg officially, and around 55mpg in real-world use. Road tax is very low, with cars registered before 31 March 2017 exempt from tax completely, whilst later models pay just £150 per year. Insurance costs are also low, making it an ideal purchase for younger drivers. The C1 is a fine little urban runabout with light steering and a small turning circle, though it's not particularly accomplished on faster roads and can feel unsettled over bumps.

Best for: Younger drivers embarking on car ownership for the first time, urban drivers seeking an affordable and easy-to-park city car, and those attracted to its distinctive design and funky Airspace roll-top version.

Not ideal for: Drivers needing a spacious boot, those prioritising driving dynamics, or buyers seeking an extended warranty comparable to Hyundai and Kia offerings.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C1 if: You're a younger driver embarking on car ownership, seeking an affordable and easy-to-park city car, or attracted to its distinctive design and funky Airspace roll-top version.

Consider alternatives if: You need a spacious boot, prioritise driving dynamics, or require an extended warranty comparable to Hyundai and Kia offerings.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C1 (2014-2020) is a charming city car with distinctive styling and excellent affordability, making it appealing to first-time buyers and urban drivers. However, it faces strong competition in this segment. The Hyundai i10 is a very good car to drive with superior ratings, the Volkswagen Up offers greater badge appeal and better driving dynamics, whilst the Kia Picanto provides more practicality and a superior warranty. The C1's problem is that it doesn't offer a compelling proposition in any one area when compared to its rivals, and in some cases those rivals offer distinct advantages. It should be on your shortlist, but don't be surprised if you prefer one of its rivals.

Didnt think Id be able to afford a Citroen C1 Flair so was really pleased when I found this car in my price bracket. Its a smart looking car inside and out. Having never driven anything less than a 1.4 engine I was apprehensive about dropping to a 999cc. I no longer need to do regular long distance motorway driving but this little car doesnt struggle when accelerating upto 70 miles per hour ( foot not hard to floor and felt it could easily gone past 70 without any effort). Its a more comfortable ride than I expected for a small car and its nippy. Yes it does have a bit of a roar when pulling away in 1st . Its Toyota engine has 3 cylinders so perhaps that accounts for the roar . Pulls away better in 2nd. Like the fact its a chain as against cambelt - no expensive repairs. The front seats are roomy whilst the back a little neat but enough for my needs and to fit 2 grandchildren in. Whilst the boot is small and compact . Generally , I wont be transporting rear passengers often ( apart from the dog ) so big enough for my needs. The rear seats split and fold flat when need extra space. Excellent features in the Flair and park assist is useful. Very good qualityAudio system and display screen. Good connection for telephone calls( only gripe is cant seem to transfer my phone contacts??? ). As I havent owned it for long Ive given it 4 stars as unable to comment on economics of running the car but if the specs prove to be true etc... may well rate 5 in future.

The C1 us a very good vehicle excellent value for money and very economical from fuel to insurance and maintenance, although some models are basic but this shouldnt detract from its good points.
