Citroen C1 (2014-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cute and quirky looks | Very small boot, even for a city car |
| Easy to drive and small enough to make parking a doddle | A VW Up is better to drive |
| Funky roll-top version | The Citroen's new car warranty is short compared with those offered by Hyundai and Kia |
Quick Summary
The Citroen C1 (2014-2020) is a second-generation city car born from a collaboration with Toyota and Peugeot, offering a cute and quirky design, including an Airspace quasi-convertible option. While its interior is basic, it provides surprising front-seat space for its size, though the rear seats and 196-litre boot are notably compact. Most trims feature a seven-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, adding a touch of modern tech.
Ideal as an urban runabout, the C1 boasts light steering and a tight turning circle, making city driving effortless. However, it can feel less composed on faster roads due to body roll and firm suspension. Powered by efficient 1.0-litre or 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engines, it delivers around 55mpg in real-world driving. Its low running costs, including minimal road tax and insurance, make it an attractive and budget-friendly choice, particularly for young and older drivers.
Best for: Urban drivers, young drivers, budget-conscious buyers, those seeking a quirky design, and easy parking.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing significant boot space or comfortable rear passenger room, strong performance on faster roads, a premium interior feel, or a long new car warranty.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroen C1 | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 29.6% | 4.0/5 |
| Kia Picanto | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 29.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.8% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C1 if: You're an urban or young driver on a budget, looking for a car with cute styling, easy manoeuvrability, and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You need more boot space, better rear passenger comfort, superior driving dynamics on faster roads, a premium interior, or a longer new car warranty.
Competitive Position: The Citroen C1 (2014-2020) is a basic but charming city car, well-suited for urban environments and first-time car owners due to its appealing design, low running costs, and good reliability. While rivals like the Hyundai i10 offer a better drive and the Kia Picanto a longer warranty, the C1 remains a strong contender for its ease of use and budget-friendly nature, though it doesn't stand out significantly in any single aspect.

4.5 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Just love this car, cannot fault it. Cheap road tax and insurance, very good on fuel.
Didnt think Id be able to afford a Citroen C1 Flair so was really pleased when I found this car in my price bracket. Its a smart looking car inside and out. Having never driven anything less than a 1.4 engine I was apprehensive about dropping to a 999cc. I no longer need to do regular long distance motorway driving but this little car doesnt struggle when accelerating upto 70 miles per hour ( foot not hard to floor and felt it could easily gone past 70 without any effort). Its a more comfortable ride than I expected for a small car and its nippy. Yes it does have a bit of a roar when pulling away in 1st . Its Toyota engine has 3 cylinders so perhaps that accounts for the roar . Pulls away better in 2nd. Like the fact its a chain as against cambelt - no expensive repairs. The front seats are roomy whilst the back a little neat but enough for my needs and to fit 2 grandchildren in. Whilst the boot is small and compact . Generally , I wont be transporting rear passengers often ( apart from the dog ) so big enough for my needs. The rear seats split and fold flat when need extra space. Excellent features in the Flair and park assist is useful. Very good qualityAudio system and display screen. Good connection for telephone calls( only gripe is cant seem to transfer my phone contacts??? ). As I havent owned it for long Ive given it 4 stars as unable to comment on economics of running the car but if the specs prove to be true etc... may well rate 5 in future.
A great little car for short journeys, cheap to run and fun to drive
The C1 us a very good vehicle excellent value for money and very economical from fuel to insurance and maintenance, although some models are basic but this shouldnt detract from its good points.
Noisy, tinny and terrible suspension but good fuel economy
