Citroën C4 Picasso (2013-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Surprising kerbside appeal for an MPV	Not as sharp to drive as a Ford C-Max
Airy and spacious interior	Citroën has a poor reputation for reliability
Low running costs, especially if you choose a diesel	Some rivals have longer warranties

Quick Summary

The Citroën C4 Picasso (2013-2018) is a stylish and practical five-seat MPV that defies the notion that people carriers must look dull. With its distinctive LED daytime running lights, well-proportioned profile, and handsome rear end, it offers genuine kerbside appeal. The interior is equally impressive, featuring an airy, spacious cabin with a clean, unfussy dashboard. The three rear seats are of equal size and move independently, providing excellent flexibility. With a 537-litre boot expanding to 1,851 litres with seats folded, it offers exceptional practicality for families.

The C4 Picasso delivers a comfortable, composed driving experience with good grip and accurate steering, though body roll is noticeable in corners. Citroën's expertise in building comfortable cars shines through, with excellent bump absorption and impressive soundproofing. Around 90% of sales were diesel-powered, with the 1.6-litre HDi engines delivering real-world fuel economy of 60-65mpg, whilst the 1.2 PureTech petrol achieves 40-45mpg. Insurance groups are low (14-25 out of 50), and Citroën offers affordable servicing with fixed-price plans. The 2016 facelift introduced updated trim levels and enhanced equipment, including a full-length glass roof option.

Best for: Families seeking a stylish, spacious, and comfortable MPV with low running costs, particularly those prioritising practicality and interior space over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Buyers wanting sharp handling comparable to a Ford C-Max, those concerned about Citroën's reliability record, or those seeking extended warranty coverage.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C4 Picasso if: You're seeking a stylish, spacious, and comfortable MPV with low running costs, particularly if practicality and interior space are your priorities.

Consider alternatives if: You want sharp handling comparable to a Ford C-Max, are concerned about Citroën's reliability record, or require extended warranty coverage.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C4 Picasso is a strong contender in the five-seat MPV segment, offering the best all-round package with distinctive styling, exceptional interior space, and impressive comfort. Whilst it doesn't match the Ford C-Max for driving dynamics and has a weaker reliability reputation than the Toyota Verso or Kia Carens, its combination of style, practicality, low running costs, and affordable servicing make it an excellent choice for families prioritising comfort and space. The Volkswagen Touran offers similar ratings but at a higher price point, whilst the Renault Scenic lags behind in overall appeal.
