Citroën C5 X (2022-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very practical interior | Plug-in hybrid could be smoother |
| Good value | Infotainment can be clunky |
| Excellent ride comfort | No diesel option |
Quick Summary
The Citroën C5 X is an unconventional large family car that blends elements of estate, hatchback and crossover into a single, refreshingly different package. Roughly similar in size to the Volkswagen Passat Estate, Peugeot 508 SW and Audi A4 Avant, it stands apart thanks to its raised ride height, sweeping fastback-style roofline and SUV-like plastic body cladding. Rather than competing head-on with traditional estates, Citroën positioned the C5 X as an alternative for buyers who didn't fancy an SUV, combining executive-car refinement with a more relaxed, practical and lifestyle-oriented character.
The C5 X excels in comfort, with broad Advanced Comfort seats, clear digital dials and an excellent head-up display on most models. Boot space is plentiful at 545 litres for petrol versions and 485 litres for plug-in hybrids, with a low load lip and practical hatchback opening. Running costs are reasonable, with early 1.2-litre petrol models achieving around 40mpg, whilst later mild-hybrid versions deliver high-40s to high-50s mpg. The plug-in hybrid offers 30 miles of realistic electric range. However, handling and performance are middling, with light steering lacking feedback and noticeable body lean on challenging roads. The C5 X is unashamedly comfort-oriented, making it ideal for those prioritising practicality and refinement over driving dynamics.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable alternative to mainstream SUVs, buyers valuing practicality and good value, and those who appreciate Citroën's distinctive design philosophy.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sharp handling, enthusiastic performance, or those seeking a diesel engine option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Citroën C5 X | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 42.6% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the C5 X if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable alternative to mainstream SUVs, value practicality and good value, or appreciate Citroën's distinctive design philosophy.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling, enthusiastic performance, or require a diesel engine option.
Competitive Position: The Citroën C5 X is a charming and interesting alternative in the large family car market, offering excellent value for money partly because it never achieved the same popularity as more conventional rivals. Whilst the Volkswagen Passat and Cupra Formentor offer sharper handling and performance, the C5 X excels in comfort, practicality and affordability. It represents decent value compared to most chief rivals, with a huge boot, excellent ride quality and reasonable running costs. If you want a plug-in hybrid that's fun on a good road, the Cupra Formentor is a better choice, but the C5 X remains a thoroughly likeable and recommendable family car for those prioritising comfort and practicality.

5 Overall rating
(1 reviews)Everything is great apart from the lane keeping feature which can be removed but is a nuisance if if you forget to do this after starting the car, which you need to do every time Not sure yet about the active cruise either. I think I prefer just basic cruise control. This is my view after 500 miles so things may change.
