Reviewed a 2022 Citroen C5 X on 8 Feb 2023
Everything is great apart from the lane keeping feature which can be removed but is a nuisance if if you forget to do this after starting the car, which you need to do every time Not sure yet about the active cruise either. I think I prefer just basic cruise control. This is my view after 500 miles so things may change.

Citroen C5 X (2022-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very practical interior | Plug-in hybrid could be smoother |
| Good value | Infotainment can be clunky |
| Excellent ride comfort | No diesel option |
Quick Summary
The Citroen C5 X is an unconventional large family car that blends elements of estate, hatchback and crossover into a single, refreshingly different package. Roughly similar in size to the Volkswagen Passat Estate, Peugeot 508 SW and Audi A4 Avant, it stands apart thanks to its raised ride height, sweeping fastback roofline and SUV-like plastic body cladding. Rather than competing head-on with traditional estates, Citroen positioned the C5 X as an alternative for buyers who didn't fancy an SUV, combining executive-car refinement with a more relaxed, practical and lifestyle-oriented character.
The C5 X excels in comfort, with broad Advanced Comfort seats and the manufacturer's trademark suspension that makes it almost limo-like to ride in. Boot space is plentiful at 545 litres for petrol models and 485 litres for plug-in hybrids, whilst rear passengers enjoy plenty of legroom and headroom. Engine options include turbocharged petrol engines, a plug-in hybrid with 34-39 miles of electric range, and a mild-hybrid petrol engine. All versions feature automatic transmission. Running costs are reasonable, with petrol models achieving around 40mpg and mild-hybrid versions reaching the high-40s to high-50s mpg on longer journeys. The C5 X represents excellent value on the used market, partly because it never achieved the same popularity as more conventional rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a comfortable, practical and refreshingly different alternative to mainstream estates or SUVs, families needing spacious interiors, and those prioritising ride comfort and value for money.
Not ideal for: Drivers who prioritise handling and performance, those seeking a diesel option, or buyers wanting the sharpest infotainment graphics and smoothest plug-in hybrid experience.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroen C5 X | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 43.5% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen Passat | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Cupra Formentor | 4/5 | N/A | 34.3% | 4.0/5 |
| Peugeot 508 | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.5% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the C5 X if: You seek a comfortable, practical and refreshingly different alternative to mainstream estates or SUVs, need spacious interiors for family use, or prioritise ride comfort and value for money.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise handling and performance, require a diesel option, or want the sharpest infotainment graphics and smoothest plug-in hybrid experience.
Competitive Position: The Citroen C5 X is a charming and interesting car that offers a refreshing change from the SUVs dominating the used car market. It represents decent value for money, is exceptionally comfortable, boasts a huge boot and costs a similar amount to own as most chief rivals. Whilst handling and performance are middling at best, the C5 X excels where it matters most: practicality, comfort and affordability. It may not be objectively the best big estate or the best plug-in hybrid for efficiency or performance, but it remains a thoroughly likeable and recommendable family car for those prioritising substance over sporting credentials.
