Citroën C5 X (2022-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very practical interior | Plug-in hybrid could be smoother |
| Good value | Infotainment can be clunky |
| Excellent ride comfort | No diesel option |
Quick Summary
The Citroën C5 X is a refreshingly unconventional mid-sized estate car that blends executive comfort with SUV-inspired styling. Comparable in size to the VW Passat Estate and Peugeot 508 SW, it stands out with its distinctive shooting-brake design and rugged black plastic body cladding. Available with 1.2 or 1.6 petrol engines, plus a plug-in hybrid offering up to 34 miles of electric range, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Priced competitively closer to a VW Golf than a Passat, it delivers impressive value for money with healthy depreciation forecasts and attractive finance deals.
The C5 X excels in practicality and comfort, featuring spacious, cushioned 'advanced comfort' seats, a generous 485-545 litre boot, and the trademark French Advanced Comfort Suspension that delivers a limo-like ride. Standard equipment is generous across all trims, including LED headlights, parking sensors, and infotainment systems with satnav. However, the driving experience is comfort-focused rather than engaging, with middling performance and handling. The 1.2 PureTech achieves around 40mpg in real-world use, whilst the plug-in hybrid suits those with regular short journeys and charging access. Running costs remain affordable with competitive fixed-price service packages.
Best for: Families seeking a practical, comfortable, and affordable alternative to conventional SUVs, those prioritising ride quality and interior space, and buyers interested in plug-in hybrid technology for regular short journeys.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging handling and performance, those requiring a diesel option, or buyers seeking the sharpest infotainment systems and cutting-edge technology.

The Verdict
You should buy the C5 X if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable, and affordable alternative to conventional SUVs, prioritise ride quality and interior space, or are interested in plug-in hybrid technology for regular short journeys.
Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling and performance, require a diesel option, or seek the sharpest infotainment systems and cutting-edge technology.
Competitive Position: The Citroën C5 X is a charming and refreshingly unconventional choice in the mid-sized estate market. Whilst it doesn't match the Volkswagen Passat for refinement or the Cupra Formentor for performance and handling, it offers excellent value, superior comfort, and impressive practicality. The C5 X is ideal for families prioritising comfort and space over driving dynamics. Its competitive pricing, healthy depreciation forecasts, and affordable running costs make it a thoroughly likeable and recommendable family car, particularly for those seeking something different from the SUV-dominated market.

4.5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Everything is great apart from the lane keeping feature which can be removed but is a nuisance if if you forget to do this after starting the car, which you need to do every time Not sure yet about the active cruise either. I think I prefer just basic cruise control. This is my view after 500 miles so things may change.
Think the car is a usual class Citroen auto, but the upholstery and engine sizes let it down.
