DS 3 (2023-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive styling | Very limited practicality |
| Impressive powertrains | Patchy interior quality |
| Low BIK bills on EV version | Not cheap to buy |
Quick Summary
The DS 3 (2023-present) is a small crossover SUV that has evolved from its supermini roots, aiming for a premium feel with avant-garde design. It seeks to stand out with unconventional styling and luxury equipment, competing with rivals like the Vauxhall Mokka and Audi Q2. While it boasts distinctive looks and a decent driving experience with a reasonably composed ride, its practicality is limited, especially in the tight rear seats, and the 350-litre boot is smaller than many competitors.
Two turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engines offer good grunt, and an all-electric E-Tense model provides 153bhp and an official range of up to 250 miles. Running costs for petrol models are efficient, achieving around 40 mpg in real-world driving, and the E-Tense benefits from low company car tax and a standard heat pump. However, its premium pricing can be a drawback, especially compared to less expensive, equally talented rivals, and its overall appeal is hampered by a lack of dazzle in any particular area.
Best for: Company car drivers (E-Tense), those seeking distinctive avant-garde styling and luxury features, buyers for whom practicality is not a top priority.
Not ideal for: Families needing generous rear passenger space or a large boot, budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising outright driving dynamics or value for money.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS DS 3 Review | 2/5 | 4.4/5 | 39.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 3.9/5 | 34.8% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q2 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Cross | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 33.0% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the DS 3 if: You're a company car driver considering the E-Tense for its low BIK, you appreciate distinctive avant-garde styling and luxury features, and practicality is not your highest priority.
Consider alternatives if: You need generous rear passenger space or a large boot, you prioritise sharper driving dynamics over a comfortable ride, or you are looking for a more budget-friendly option.
Competitive Position: The DS 3 aims to carve out a niche as a premium, stylish small crossover. While it offers unique design and a decent driving experience with efficient powertrains, its high price tag and limited practicality make it a challenging proposition against more well-rounded and often cheaper rivals like the Ford Puma, or established premium options like the Audi Q2. Its electric E-Tense variant, however, offers a compelling package for company car users due to favourable tax benefits.

4.4 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Really good value for money, plenty of space and a nice drive
It looks stunning and drives well. Really, really comfortable and spacious
Great little car lovely to drive.plenty of space and very nippy
I first experienced the ds3 in 2016 when I leased one for two years. It was the DS3 1.6 thp ultra prestige 165 hp. What a car. The sports suspension rides harder than usual but the benefits are tight cornering and a car that feels attached to the road. I never felt unsafe and acceleration was fast given it was not a hot hatchback. Everything was to hand and the sports seats gave good support. Critics moan about this car not being up with the mini or golf, its not meant to be it has its own character and I loved it.
This car is very good value.i was expecting a cd player though
