DS 3 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Distinctive styling	Very limited practicality
Impressive powertrains	Patchy interior quality
Low BIK bills on EV version	Not cheap to buy

Quick Summary

The DS 3 is a small premium crossover that prioritises style and individuality over practicality. With its distinctive design, flush-fitting door handles and fashion-led approach, it offers something different from mainstream compact SUVs. Available with hybrid or fully electric powertrains, the DS 3 combines French luxury flair with everyday usability. The E-Tense electric version delivers 154bhp, an official range of 248 miles, and rapid DC charging capability, whilst the Hybrid 145 pairs a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric assistance for smooth, efficient driving around town.

However, the DS 3's high price tag is difficult to justify given its significant practical shortcomings. Rear seat space is extremely tight, the boot is small at 350 litres with a high load lip, and the iconic shark fin design blocks part of the rear window, creating a claustrophobic feel. Interior quality is patchy, and resale values are historically weak compared with premium rivals. That said, company car drivers considering the E-Tense version will benefit from low BIK bills, and the car's composed, comfortable ride and well-equipped cabin appeal to those prioritising style over substance.

Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking a distinctive premium compact crossover, company car drivers interested in the E-Tense electric version, and those who value comfort and luxury over practicality.

Not ideal for: Families needing rear seat space or boot capacity, buyers seeking the best value for money, or those prioritising sharp handling and driving engagement.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the DS 3 if: You prioritise distinctive styling and premium feel, are a company car driver interested in the E-Tense electric version, or value comfort and luxury over practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You need rear seat space, require a spacious boot, seek the best value for money, or prioritise sharp handling and driving engagement.

Competitive Position: The DS 3 occupies an interesting niche as a style-focused premium compact crossover, but struggles to justify its high price tag against more practical and better-value rivals. Whilst it excels in distinctive design and offers impressive powertrains, including an efficient hybrid and an attractive electric option with low company car tax implications, its limited practicality and patchy interior quality hold it back. The Volkswagen T-Cross offers superior practicality and value, the Audi Q2 provides genuine premium credentials, and the BMW X5 delivers luxury and space. For buyers willing to sacrifice practicality for style and willing to pay a premium for it, the DS 3 delivers; for everyone else, alternatives offer better overall propositions.
