A cracking little motor. Basic but for the price is just what I wanted. Has most of the toys one would like in a car. Just a couple missing. Sat nav. Dab. But for the price I can live without. Drives very well. Good mpg.

Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordable to buy and cheap to run | Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals |
| 4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers | The Panda isn't very well equipped |
| Cute and distinctive looks | Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta |
Quick Summary
The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up. Now in its third generation, it's an honest and unpretentious car with considerable charm and character. The Panda offers surprising practicality for its size, with a clever rear-seat sliding system that allows you to trade passenger legroom for additional boot space. Three adults can sit abreast in the back, and the rear seats fold with a 60/40 split for extra flexibility.
However, the Panda suffers from significant safety concerns, scoring zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018 and earning only 17% for child occupancy safety. If you regularly carry children, this should be a serious consideration. The car is starting to show its age in other areas too, with some models lacking Bluetooth audio streaming and occasional poorly finished trim. Running costs are low across all variants, with the 1.2-litre petrol averaging around 50mpg and the Twinair versions returning approximately 40mpg. Vehicle Excise Duty varies depending on the model year, whilst insurance costs remain affordable. The Panda offers an array of options and neat detailing, making it a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a frugal and functional runabout.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, practical city car; those wanting all-wheel-drive in a compact package; drivers prioritising low running costs and insurance premiums.
Not ideal for: Families with children who prioritise safety; buyers seeking modern safety features and equipment; those wanting a car that's fun to drive or well-equipped.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 35.7% | 4.2/5 |
| Kia Picanto | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.4% | 4.2/5 |

| Jeep Renegade | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 32.6% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Panda if: You're on a tight budget, seeking an affordable and practical city car, wanting all-wheel-drive in a compact package, or prioritising low running costs and insurance premiums.
Consider alternatives if: You have children and prioritise modern safety features, require comprehensive equipment and technology, or want a car that's engaging to drive.
Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a compelling choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and practical city car. Whilst it may lack the safety credentials and modern equipment of rivals like the Volkswagen Up, its distinctive charm, practicality, and low running costs make it an attractive proposition. The availability of 4x4 variants is a unique selling point in this segment. However, potential buyers should carefully consider the safety implications, particularly if children will be regular passengers. For those prioritising safety and modern features, alternatives such as the Hyundai i10 or a used Volkswagen Up would prove more competent options.
