A cracking little motor. Basic but for the price is just what I wanted. Has most of the toys one would like in a car. Just a couple missing. Sat nav. Dab. But for the price I can live without. Drives very well. Good mpg.

Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordable to buy and cheap to run | Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals |
| 4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers | The Panda isn't very well equipped |
| Cute and distinctive looks | Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta |
Quick Summary
The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Up. Now in its third generation, it's an honest and unpretentious car with considerable charm and character. The Panda offers surprising practicality for its size, with generous rear legroom and a clever boot system that allows rear seats to slide forwards or backwards to trade passenger space for additional luggage capacity. The range is split between the city-focused Panda Life and the pseudo-SUV Panda Cross models, with various trim levels available to suit different budgets and requirements.
However, the Panda is starting to show its age, particularly regarding safety. It scored zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018, a significant concern if you intend to regularly carry children. The car also lacks modern conveniences such as Bluetooth audio streaming on some models and feels less well-equipped than contemporary rivals. Despite these shortcomings, the Panda remains an appealing choice for those seeking an affordable, characterful runabout with low running costs. Engine options include a 1.2-litre petrol, 1.3-litre diesel, and the engaging 0.9-litre Twinair, with 4x4 variants available on the second-hand market for those needing all-wheel-drive capability.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and characterful city car, country-dwellers interested in 4x4 variants, and those prioritising low running costs and practicality.
Not ideal for: Families regularly carrying children, buyers prioritising modern safety features and equipment, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.4% | 4.0/5 |
| Kia Picanto | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 34.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Citroen C1 | 3/5 | 3.4/5 | 30.8% | 3.9/5 |
| Jeep Renegade | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 39.1% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Panda if: You're on a budget seeking an affordable and characterful city car, interested in 4x4 variants for country driving, or prioritising low running costs and practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You regularly carry children, require modern safety features and equipment, or seek engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta.
Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is an appealing choice in the budget city car segment, offering distinctive charm, practicality, and excellent value. Whilst it may lack the safety credentials and modern equipment of rivals such as the Kia Picanto, and doesn't match the driving engagement of sportier alternatives, its affordability, low running costs, and unique 4x4 availability make it compelling for budget-conscious buyers. The Kia Picanto edges ahead with better user ratings and safety features, whilst the Panda's character and practicality remain distinctive strengths in a competitive market.
