Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable for long-distance driving | Not as sharp to drive as most Fords |
| Very spacious cabin and boot | Earlier engines are less efficient than later units |
| Lots of kit as standard | Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels |
Quick Summary
The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a big, well-equipped, and comfortable family SUV that offers exceptional value for money. Originally intended for the North American market, Ford brought this flagship SUV to Europe to capitalise on the growing SUV boom. Larger in every direction than premium rivals like the Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5, the Edge delivers more car for your cash than almost any competitor. The vast exterior translates into a cavernous interior with abundant leg, headroom, and shoulder room, whilst the 602-litre boot expands to 1,688 litres with the rear seats folded. Thoughtful touches include padded rear seat belts, deep storage compartments, and door bottoms that protect clothing from mud and grime.
The Edge excels as a refined long-distance cruiser, with smooth diesel engines and responsive gearboxes that deliver up to 42.4mpg on official figures. Its commanding driving position, exceptional spaciousness, and comprehensive standard equipment make it an excellent family car. Whilst it lacks the driving dynamism of smaller Ford SUVs and depreciation is rapid, buying at the right price point makes the Edge an outstanding proposition. The 2018 facelift introduced new headlamps, a revised grille, and the eight-speed torque converter automatic that best suits the car's character.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with excellent value for money and commanding road presence.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sharp handling, driving dynamism, or premium badge appeal, or those concerned about rapid depreciation and resale value.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Edge | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 29.1% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Edge if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with excellent value for money and commanding road presence.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp handling, driving dynamism, or premium badge appeal, or are concerned about rapid depreciation and resale value.
Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a compelling choice in the premium SUV market, offering exceptional spaciousness and value that rivals like the Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Touareg struggle to match. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and overall refinement, the Edge's generous proportions, comprehensive standard equipment, and comfortable long-distance capability make it an outstanding proposition for families prioritising practicality and value. Its rapid depreciation means savvy buyers can acquire a well-equipped example at a fraction of its original price, making it one of the market's best value premium SUVs.

4.7 Overall rating
(6 reviews)Not sure why there aren't more of these on the road, 4wd, good size, economical, nice style and extremely comfortable.
Very pleased , a nice car , worth a go , loads of spec
On researching the ford edge I found it’s not got a very good full turning circle. I live in very winding lanes and need to turn around in the road slot so it won’t be for me. Shame because it looked very good from the advert
Having run a 2016 Edge Titanium 2.0 auto with Luxury Pack (full leather, panoramic roof, heated/cooled seats, etc.,) for over 5 1/2 years, I wanted to update the model knowing that Ford stopped selling them in the U.K in 2019. The ST-Line model purchased is very similarly specified to the Titanium which means a high level - with additional ‘bells and whistles’ such as blind spot indicators, B&O sound system, front camera (in addition to rear reversing camera), different transmission, etc, etc; in other words, a lot of car for your money and comparable with cars carrying a premium badge. Styling has been upgraded with some real changes (improvements) to body styling with a grea5 paint finish. The Edge is a large car but handles well and relatively economical. I suspect the Eco-blue engine may not be as frugal as the ‘old’ TDi but it’s better for the environment. This model is still available in the U.S. -what a pity they’re not bringing them over here.
Great car. Lovely to drive with plenty of gadgets.
