Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfortable for long-distance driving	Not as sharp to drive as most Fords
Very spacious cabin and boot	Earlier engines are less efficient than later units
Lots of kit as standard	Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels

Quick Summary

The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is Ford's flagship SUV, offering more space and equipment than premium rivals like the Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5 at a significantly lower price point. Originally intended for North America, Ford brought this big, well-equipped family SUV to Europe to capitalise on the SUV boom. Despite a facelift in 2018 featuring new headlamps, revised grille, and updated trim lines, the Edge struggled for sales success and was discontinued at the end of 2019, though new examples remained available in 2020.

The Edge excels as a refined long-distance cruiser with an exceptionally spacious cabin offering abundant accommodation for families. With 602 litres of boot space expanding to 1,688 litres with the rear seats folded, it provides exceptional practicality. All versions came well-equipped with dual-zone climate control, touchscreen infotainment, parking sensors, and rearview cameras. Fuel economy reaches up to 42.4mpg on later models, whilst servicing costs remain competitive through Ford's dealer network. However, the Edge sheds value rapidly and lacks the driving dynamism of smaller Ford SUVs.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with commanding driving position and exceptional boot space at excellent value.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising sharp driving dynamics, premium badge appeal, or vehicles that retain value well, or those concerned about dual-mass flywheel reliability issues.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Edge if: You're seeking a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped long-distance cruiser with commanding driving position and exceptional boot space at excellent value.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sharp driving dynamics, premium badge appeal, or vehicles that retain value well, or you're concerned about dual-mass flywheel reliability issues.

Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) represents outstanding value in the premium SUV segment, offering more space and equipment than rivals like the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 at a significantly lower price. Whilst the BMW X3 edges ahead on driving dynamics and the Volkswagen Touareg offers comparable practicality, the Edge's exceptional spaciousness, comprehensive standard equipment, and refined long-distance comfort make it an excellent choice for families prioritising practicality and value over premium badge appeal. Rapid depreciation means savvy buyers can acquire well-equipped examples at bargain prices, though resale value won't match German competitors.
