Ford Edge (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable for long-distance driving | Not as sharp to drive as most Fords |
| Very spacious cabin and boot | Earlier engines are less efficient than later units |
| Lots of kit as standard | Some reliability issues with dual-mass flywheels |
Quick Summary
The Ford Edge (2016-2020) is a large, comfortable, and well-equipped family SUV that offers exceptional interior space and a generous 602-litre boot, expanding to 1,688 litres. While its substantial two-tonne mass means it's not the most agile, its smooth diesel engines and comfortable ride make it an excellent long-distance cruiser, prioritising refinement and stress-free motorway driving over sporty dynamics. It comes loaded with standard features, including a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, parking sensors, and for later models, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
As a used car, the Edge represents incredible value for money, often found for significantly less than its original price, though it depreciates quickly. Running costs are reasonable for its class, with good fuel economy (up to 42.4mpg) and affordable servicing through the Ford network. It's a sensible choice for those seeking a spacious, practical family vehicle without the premium badge snobbery of rivals, offering more car for the cash.
Best for: Buyers on a budget, families needing abundant space and comfort, long-distance commuters, and those who value standard equipment and practicality over badge appeal.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising premium badge appeal, those seeking sharp driving dynamics and agility, or buyers concerned about rapid depreciation.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Edge | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.1% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Volkswagen Touareg | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 33.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Edge if: You're on a budget, seeking abundant space and comfort for families, are a long-distance commuter, or value standard equipment and practicality over badge appeal.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium badge appeal, sharp driving dynamics and agility, or are concerned about rapid depreciation.
Competitive Position: The Ford Edge (2016-2020) carves out a niche as a significantly larger and more spacious alternative to premium SUVs like the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, often at a much lower price point on the used market. While it may not offer the same badge prestige or dynamic driving experience as some rivals, its strengths lie in its immense practicality, comfortable long-distance cruising ability, and generous standard equipment. Its rapid depreciation makes it an excellent value proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum space and features, provided they are aware of its resale value.

4.6 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Having run a 2016 Edge Titanium 2.0 auto with Luxury Pack (full leather, panoramic roof, heated/cooled seats, etc.,) for over 5 1/2 years, I wanted to update the model knowing that Ford stopped selling them in the U.K in 2019. The ST-Line model purchased is very similarly specified to the Titanium which means a high level - with additional ‘bells and whistles’ such as blind spot indicators, B&O sound system, front camera (in addition to rear reversing camera), different transmission, etc, etc; in other words, a lot of car for your money and comparable with cars carrying a premium badge. Styling has been upgraded with some real changes (improvements) to body styling with a grea5 paint finish. The Edge is a large car but handles well and relatively economical. I suspect the Eco-blue engine may not be as frugal as the ‘old’ TDi but it’s better for the environment. This model is still available in the U.S. -what a pity they’re not bringing them over here.
Great car. Lovely to drive with plenty of gadgets.
The Ford Edge, to be honest is very well equipped , heated seats front and rear for example. My only slight misgiving is that only a few of the cars I have seen on ads or for real have a front camera as well as a back one which is standard. Leather seats are a must, The info screen. Is great and the sound system sounds perfect. Personally I really love this car and it’s very rare you here me say that.
It is suitable for new drivers because it is easily access to urban areas and parks without any hesitation and the fuel consumption is fair as well. Three doors are crucial for kids travelling.
The vehicle is well equipped. Leather seats as standard. Good size info screen. Dash is great with sign id and stay in lane as well and park assist . As it is a ford then parts are cheaper and therefore costs to maintain are lower. My only slight reservation is the front of the car is wider than some others. The equivalents are Volkswagen Tiguan or discovery sport or Nissan extrail.
