Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Rewarding to drive and comfortable to travel in	Not quite as sharp to drive as a Ford S-Max
Plenty of space in all three rows of seats	Powerful petrol models are thirsty
Decent boot, even when all seven seats are in use	Lacks sliding rear doors

Quick Summary

The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a large, versatile seven-seat MPV that combines practicality with genuine driving enjoyment. With a roomy interior, flexible seating arrangements, and excellent storage solutions, it's one of the most capable people carriers available. The Galaxy features powered middle and third-row seats that fold into the floor, offering up to 2,339 litres of boot space when fully configured. Its refined cabin, smooth ride quality, and responsive handling make it more engaging to drive than most rivals, whilst remaining comfortable for all passengers on both short trips and longer journeys.

Engine options have evolved throughout the generation, with early models offering a choice of petrol and diesel units. From 2019 onwards, Ford streamlined the range to focus on EcoBlue diesel engines with 150hp or 190hp, delivering a good balance of performance and economy. The final iteration introduced a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid as the sole option. Running costs are generally modest, with diesel variants achieving mid-to-high 30s mpg in real-world driving. The Galaxy's well-appointed interior, featuring SYNC 3 infotainment with smartphone integration on later models, makes it an excellent choice for families seeking a practical, comfortable, and enjoyable seven-seater.

Best for: Growing families needing seven seats, those prioritising practicality and comfort, and drivers who want an MPV that's rewarding to drive.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the sharpest handling (consider the Ford S-Max), those wanting sliding rear doors, or those planning to regularly carry adults in the third row on long journeys.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Galaxy if: You need a spacious seven-seat family car that's rewarding to drive, prioritise practicality and comfort, and want an MPV with excellent storage and flexible seating.

Consider alternatives if: You want the sharpest handling dynamics, require sliding rear doors, or plan to regularly carry adults in the third row on extended journeys.

Competitive Position: The Ford Galaxy (2015-2023) is a standout performer in the MPV segment, offering superior driving dynamics compared to most rivals whilst maintaining excellent practicality. Its refined cabin, comfortable ride, and responsive handling set it apart from the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso, whilst it matches the Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra for space and versatility. Though the Sharan and Alhambra offer sliding rear doors and the Alhambra scores marginally higher with users, the Galaxy's engaging driving experience and well-appointed interior make it an excellent choice for families seeking a people carrier that doesn't compromise on driving enjoyment.
