Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
More practical than most city cars	Dull looks
The majority of Ka+ models have smartphone mirroring	Lacklustre engines
Supple ride	Down-market interior

Quick Summary

The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) is a practical city car that sits between the traditional city car and supermini segments. Based on the Fiesta platform, it offers more interior space than its predecessor, with a higher roofline providing good headroom and legroom in the rear seats, making it suitable for families with young children. The 270-litre boot expands to 849 litres with the rear seats folded. Despite its unglamorous styling, the Ka+ benefits from Ford's engineering expertise, delivering direct steering, responsive handling, and a supple ride that smooths out road imperfections effectively.

However, the Ka+ is undermined by cost-cutting measures that limit its appeal. Engine options are lacklustre, with the base 1.2-litre petrol units producing only 68 or 74bhp, resulting in sluggish acceleration. A 1.5-litre diesel was added post-2018 facelift, offering better performance and efficiency. The interior uses hard plastics and spartan design, though this aids durability. Running costs are low, with fuel economy around 49-55mpg for petrol and 68.9mpg for diesel, plus competitive insurance and servicing costs. The Ka+ disappeared from showrooms in 2020 after failing to gain significant market traction.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking practicality and low running costs, families with young children needing rear space, and those prioritising value over premium appeal.

Not ideal for: Buyers wanting stylish design, engaging driving dynamics, or powerful engines; those seeking premium interior quality or badge prestige.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ka+ if: You're on a tight budget, seeking practicality and low running costs, have young children needing rear space, or prioritise value over premium appeal.

Consider alternatives if: You want stylish design, engaging driving dynamics, powerful engines, premium interior quality, or badge prestige.

Competitive Position: The Ford Ka+ (2016-2020) occupies an awkward middle ground between city cars and superminis, which ultimately works against it. Whilst it benefits from Ford's engineering heritage and offers a supple ride with practical space, the lacklustre engines, down-market interior, and dull styling undermine its proposition. The Hyundai i10 and Skoda Citigo are stronger overall choices, offering better quality, more equipment, and superior on-road ability. The Dacia Sandero provides better value as a supermini alternative. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising practicality and low costs, the Ka+ remains a sensible option, but it lacks the refinement and appeal of its key rivals.
