Ford Mustang Mach-E (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very strong performance	Not as much fun to drive as a Jaguar I-Pace
Practical cabin	Firm ride
Impressive infotainment system	The interior could be better finished

Quick Summary

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a large five-door electric SUV that reimagines Ford's iconic Mustang brand for the EV era. Available with two battery sizes—68kWh Standard Range and 88kWh Extended Range—it offers official WLTP ranges of 248 to 379 miles depending on specification. Both batteries are available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with the range-topping Extended Range AWD delivering 335 miles officially. Real-world range varies with conditions; winter motorway driving may see around 220 miles, whilst summer driving could achieve 300 miles. The Mach-E delivers impressive performance with the Extended Range AWD producing 346bhp, whilst the GT variant offers 480bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 3.7 seconds.

The Mach-E excels in practicality and technology, featuring a huge 15.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, generous equipment levels across all variants, and excellent charging capabilities with up to 150kW rapid charging available. Running costs are competitive for an EV, with home charging costing around £10-£12.30 for a full charge, equating to approximately 5p per mile. Electric vehicles are exempt from the premium tax on cars over £40,000, saving £2,375 over six years. Servicing intervals of two years or 18,000 miles promise good long-term savings, though insurance and tyre costs reflect the car's weight and performance. The 402-litre boot is practical though smaller than some rivals, and the flat floor provides excellent rear legroom and headroom.

Best for: Buyers seeking a practical, high-performance electric SUV with strong value compared to premium rivals, those prioritising impressive technology and infotainment, and drivers wanting an engaging driving experience with genuine performance credentials.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the most engaging driving dynamics (the Jaguar I-Pace offers more sporting feel), buyers wanting a plusher interior finish, or drivers seeking maximum real-world efficiency and range in all conditions.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mach-E if: You want a practical, high-performance electric SUV with strong value compared to premium rivals, prioritise impressive technology and infotainment, or seek an engaging driving experience with genuine performance credentials.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the most engaging driving dynamics, desire a plusher interior finish, or require maximum real-world efficiency and range in all conditions.

Competitive Position: The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a compelling electric SUV that delivers an excellent balance of practicality, performance, and value. Whilst the Jaguar I-Pace offers a more sporting driving experience and the Kia e-Niro provides excellent value, the Mach-E stands out for its impressive infotainment system, strong performance credentials, and competitive pricing. The BMW iX3 offers premium appeal, but the Mach-E remains one of the most complete and engaging electric SUVs available, particularly for buyers seeking performance without sacrificing practicality.
