Honda Civic (2016-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Dependable family transport | Frustrating infotainment |
| The Type R hot hatch is tremendous fun | Interior quality could be better |
| Choice of frugal engines | Regular models are rather ordinary to drive |
Quick Summary
The Honda Civic (2016-2021) is the 10th generation of a long-standing family hatchback, known for its solid reputation for reliability, despite this generation having a few more foibles. Launched in 2016, it features flamboyant styling and good levels of passenger room, particularly generous rear kneeroom. Its 478-litre boot is a very good size for buggies and bulky items, making it one of the most spacious in its class, though it lacks fancy storage solutions found in some rivals.
The Civic offers a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines (1.0-litre and 1.5-litre) and a frugal 1.6-litre diesel, with manual or CVT automatic gearboxes. The 1.0-litre is a surprisingly capable and economical choice, with the diesel often achieving over 60mpg. While not as refined as a Ford Focus, it provides a happy balance of motorway manners, ride comfort, and predictable handling. Running costs are generally low, with competitive insurance groups, though depreciation might be slightly higher than some rivals. The Type R hot hatch offers an exhilarating drive and holds its value well.
Best for: Drivers seeking a dependable, practical family car, those prioritising frugal engines and low running costs, or buyers looking for an exciting hot hatch (Type R).
Not ideal for: Drivers who want a premium-feeling interior or a flawless infotainment system, those who prefer the absolute finest handling dynamics in a regular hatchback, or buyers sensitive to slightly higher depreciation compared to some rivals.

The Verdict
You should buy the Honda Civic if: You're seeking a dependable, practical family car, prioritise frugal engines and low running costs, or are looking for an exciting hot hatch (Type R).
Consider alternatives if: You desire a premium-feeling interior or a flawless infotainment system, prefer the absolute finest handling dynamics in a regular hatchback, or are sensitive to slightly higher depreciation compared to some rivals.
Competitive Position: The Honda Civic (2016-2021) is a strong contender in the family hatchback class, offering excellent practicality, frugal engines, and a comprehensive suite of standard driver aids. While its infotainment system and interior quality may not match rivals like the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus, its reliable nature, comfortable cabin, and the availability of the exhilarating Type R make it a worthy choice. It provides a good balance of features, especially in SR trim, making it an enjoyable and safe family car in a highly competitive segment.

4.3 Overall rating
(40 reviews)I actual purchased this car after making it a favourite. It’s an amazing car…. I’m shocked at the performance for a 3 cylinder 1 litre turbo car. Strongly advise purchasing 1 for first time drivers or ppl than want to keep car cost down but have something with a little bit of sportiness out of a car
Having owned a Honda Civic for the last 10 years, we do know how good they are, so we decided to stick with the same model type, our new car is a dream car, it has every thing you need for safety and comfort, and ease to drive
So far I love the car. Economy seems good 45mpg mainly town. Very well equipped ( not quite as good as the Kia Sportage K5. ) very quiet and comfortable. Infotainment system takes some working out but performs well. Oh and it has a manual handbrake which is a big plus as far as I’m concerned. The fit and finish is superb. The 19” alloys really set it off. I tend to change cars quite often but I think I might keep this one longer than usual
I have had a 2008 civic se 1.4 from new for thirteen years, I have done 90,OOO faultless miles in it. The car still pulls away like a dream drives like a dream, Its like a bottle of vintage wine, it gets better with age and distance. I have just bought a new civic, fancied an upgrade but reluctant to get rid of the old one, Its just such a straight forward car car.
I liked the car so much I bought it. Very smooth drive and the tax is only £10 per year.
