Good light worker, efficient, affordable, good value. Has some go in the higher revs should it be needed.

I know that it is known as quite boxy especially inside but the 2010 version rather than the 2009 seemed well thought through and it looked great for its value on the outside. Such a reliable vehicle but I needed to have taken a bit more care over the bumps etc.

A very good alternative to Fiesta or Polo and a lot cheaper than the Volkswagon.

Hyundai i20 Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Well equipped, even if you choose the entry-level car | Patchy standard of interior finish |
| Easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment | Not the cheapest to buy |
| Solid reliability and a long warranty | Fuel economy is unspectacular |
Quick Summary
The Hyundai i20 is a very fine small car that's more spacious than most rivals, with useful performance and a bit of handling verve if you really look for it. It's stable, reassuring, and very grown-up feeling, even on the motorway. The touchscreen infotainment is one of the best in the class, and the car comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty that includes breakdown cover. Even the entry-level model is well equipped with alloy wheels, air-conditioning, electric windows, cruise control, parking sensors, and a 10.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
However, small cars are about delivering good value, and the i20 is relatively pricey for the class. Even the cheapest model costs over £1,500 more than comparable rivals like the Renault Clio. Fuel economy is unspectacular at around 45mpg in real-world driving, and several competitors offer better efficiency. The interior finish is also patchy, with some hard plastics that don't match the quality of the VW Polo. For all its strengths, the i20 needs a more realistic price to deliver wholehearted approval.
Best for: Buyers prioritising equipment, technology, and warranty cover, those seeking a spacious and grown-up feeling small car, and drivers who value reliability and peace of mind.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking the best fuel economy in the class, or buyers expecting premium interior quality throughout.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai i20 | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 31.6% | 4.4/5 |
| Renault Clio | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.0% | 4.3/5 |
| Volkswagen Polo | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.9% | 4.5/5 |
| Toyota Yaris | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.5% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the i20 if: You prioritise equipment and technology, seek a spacious and grown-up feeling small car, or value reliability and comprehensive warranty cover.
Consider alternatives if: You're on a tight budget, seeking the best fuel economy in the class, or expecting premium interior quality throughout.
Competitive Position: The Hyundai i20 is a very good small car that excels in equipment, infotainment, and warranty provision. However, it struggles to justify its premium pricing in a class defined by value. Rivals like the Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris offer better fuel economy and value, whilst the Volkswagen Polo delivers superior interior quality and handling. The i20 is best suited to buyers willing to pay more for technology and peace of mind, rather than those seeking traditional supermini value.
