Hyundai i800 (2008-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
One of the few cars with room for eight	Poor fuel economy
Lots of luggage space	Interior quality could be better
Cheap to buy	Huge size makes finding a parking space a challenge

Quick Summary

The Hyundai i800 (2008-2019) is a full eight-seater van-based people carrier designed for large families requiring maximum seating capacity. Based on the Hyundai iLoad van, it measures over five metres in length and offers exceptional interior space with 851 litres of boot capacity even with all seats in place. The i800 remained largely unchanged throughout its 11-year production run, with only subtle refreshes in 2016. All six rear seats are full-sized and comfortable for adults, whilst large sliding side doors and a spacious tailgate make loading and unloading passengers straightforward, even in tight parking spaces.

The i800 is powered by a single 2.5-litre diesel engine available in 134bhp or 168bhp variants, paired with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. Whilst it drives like a van with a commanding driving position and excellent visibility, fuel consumption is modest at around 31mpg for the manual version. The interior, though well-equipped with air-conditioning, remote locking, and parking sensors as standard, feels utilitarian with materials and design dating from 2008. Insurance groupings range from 28-35, and servicing is required every 10,000 miles with fixed-price plans available.

Best for: Large families needing eight seats, buyers seeking maximum practicality and luggage space on a budget, and those prioritising seating capacity over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Drivers concerned with fuel economy, those seeking premium interior quality comparable to rivals like the VW Caravelle or Mercedes V-Class, or buyers with limited parking space due to the vehicle's substantial size.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the i800 if: You need eight seats, seek maximum practicality and luggage space on a budget, or prioritise seating capacity over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You are concerned with fuel economy, seeking premium interior quality comparable to the VW Caravelle or Mercedes V-Class, or have limited parking space.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai i800 (2008-2019) is a practical and affordable eight-seater people carrier that stands out for its exceptional seating capacity and spaciousness. Whilst rivals like the Land Rover Discovery and Jeep Grand Cherokee offer superior build quality and driving dynamics, the i800 remains unbeaten for sheer value and practicality at its price point. Its main weakness is fuel consumption and interior quality, but for budget-conscious families requiring eight seats, it represents an honest and sensible choice that delivers on space and affordability.
