Jeep Grand Cherokee Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfy on the road, capable off it | It's hugely expensive |
| High quality interior | No seven-seater option |
| Lots of technology on board | European rivals do most things a little better |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is America's answer to the Range Rover Sport—a large SUV designed to be comfortable, refined and sophisticated on the road, yet virtually unstoppable off it. This fifth-generation model represents a significant improvement over its predecessors in terms of on-road dynamic polish, interior quality and technology. It offers a spacious 580-litre boot with a square shape and massive opening, plus class-leading rear legroom and a wide cabin that accommodates three passengers comfortably. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric motors, delivering 380 metric horsepower and impressive performance of 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds.
The Grand Cherokee excels with its smooth, fuss-free ride quality thanks to Quadra-lift air suspension with adaptive damping, whilst its sophisticated four-wheel-drive system with multiple driving modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud and Sand) ensures impressive off-road capability. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system offers wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and multiple screens, though its complexity can be challenging. Running costs are a concern due to the premium price starting around £72,000, though the plug-in hybrid drivetrain offers potential for low emissions when regularly charged. Previous Jeep Grand Cherokees have failed to dazzle against European rivals, but this latest version gets much closer to the front-runners.
Best for: Buyers seeking a luxury SUV that combines on-road comfort with genuine off-road capability, those who value spacious interiors and advanced technology, and drivers willing to invest in premium vehicles with plug-in hybrid efficiency.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring a seven-seater option, or customers prioritising European refinement and handling over American-style comfort and capability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.0% | 4.1/5 |
| Range Rover Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 32.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz G-Class | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 28.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Land Rover Defender | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.0% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Grand Cherokee if: You seek a luxury SUV combining on-road comfort with genuine off-road capability, value spacious interiors and advanced technology, and are willing to invest in premium vehicles with plug-in hybrid efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, require a seven-seater option, or prioritise European refinement and handling over American-style comfort and capability.
Competitive Position: The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a compelling offering in the luxury SUV segment, though it faces stiff competition from established European rivals. Whilst the Range Rover Sport edges ahead with superior handling and prestige, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers unmatched off-road heritage, the Grand Cherokee holds its own with impressive on-road comfort, generous interior space, and sophisticated technology. The Land Rover Defender provides a more rugged alternative at potentially lower cost. Previous generations failed to dazzle against European competitors, but this fifth-generation model gets much closer to the front-runners, making it a genuinely compelling choice for those prioritising American-style comfort and capability over traditional European refinement.

5 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Good value missing nothing I would compare to range rover
Brilliant vehicle. I’ve had 4 of them. Used for towing horse box. The pulling power is more than sufficient along with superb reliability. Saying that, preventative maintenance is my mantra. A little expensive on day to day running costs but, you get what you pay for. Luxury and comfort with all the toys. Looking for number 5.
Ive just got my Jeep and I can honestly say I love it. Very smooth ride indeed loads of extras and just what I needed to pull my Horse Trailer. Very quite running for a Deisel, best Big Truck Ive owned Runs and drives as good as it looks, Alot of car for the money
Excellent value for money with so many extras comfort and punchy this car is no slouch and will climb mountains when required steady and sturdy unbreakable with a remarkable 3.0 l Merc engine give good mpg for its size
This car is a SP{ORT Utility Vehicle , 0-60 in 5 seconds, top speed 160mph. Has every bell and whistle. I am compering this with my 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.7litre. Immaculate condition and a good price.
