Jeep Grand Cherokee Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfy on the road, capable off it | It's hugely expensive |
| High quality interior | No seven-seater option |
| Lots of technology on board | European rivals do most things a little better |
Quick Summary
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is America's answer to the Range Rover Sport, offering a large SUV designed for both on-road comfort and off-road capability. This fifth-generation model represents a significant improvement over its predecessors, delivering enhanced on-road dynamic polish, superior interior quality, and advanced technology. With a turbocharged 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid drivetrain producing 380 metric horsepower and 462lb ft of torque, it accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. The 580-litre boot provides excellent practicality, whilst the sophisticated four-wheel-drive system with multiple driving modes ensures impressive off-road unstoppability.
The Grand Cherokee comes exclusively with plug-in hybrid power in the UK, offering up to 31 miles of electric-only range and potential fuel economy of 88-97mpg on paper (though real-world figures will be considerably lower). High-end versions feature Quadra-lift air suspension with adaptive damping, delivering a smooth, controlled ride. However, at £72,000-£86,000, it's an expensive proposition, and depreciation may be heavier than European rivals. The infotainment system, whilst feature-rich, can be complex to navigate. Despite these drawbacks, it represents a compelling alternative to mainstream European luxury SUVs for buyers seeking distinctive American styling and genuine off-road prowess.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious, capable luxury SUV with impressive off-road ability and distinctive styling, those willing to invest in premium quality and technology, and drivers who can utilise the plug-in hybrid's electric range effectively.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring seven seats, or buyers prioritising the refinement and handling of established European rivals like the Range Rover Sport or Mercedes G-Class.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 22.6% | 4.0/5 |
| Range Rover Sport | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.3% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz G-Class | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.8% | 4.0/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Grand Cherokee if: You seek a spacious, capable luxury SUV with impressive off-road ability and distinctive American styling, are willing to invest in premium quality and technology, and can utilise the plug-in hybrid's electric range effectively.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, require seven seats, or prioritise the refinement and handling of established European rivals like the Range Rover Sport or Mercedes G-Class.
Competitive Position: The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a compelling alternative in the luxury SUV market, offering genuine off-road capability and distinctive styling that European rivals cannot match. Whilst it doesn't lead in on-road refinement or handling compared to the Range Rover Sport or Land Rover Defender, it provides excellent practicality, high-quality interiors, and advanced technology. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain offers an interesting selling point for environmentally conscious buyers, though running costs remain substantial. For those seeking American character and genuine off-road prowess combined with modern luxury, the Grand Cherokee is a strong contender, despite its premium pricing and heavier depreciation than established European competitors.

4.6 Overall rating
(11 reviews)Good value missing nothing I would compare to range rover
Brilliant vehicle. I’ve had 4 of them. Used for towing horse box. The pulling power is more than sufficient along with superb reliability. Saying that, preventative maintenance is my mantra. A little expensive on day to day running costs but, you get what you pay for. Luxury and comfort with all the toys. Looking for number 5.
Ive just got my Jeep and I can honestly say I love it. Very smooth ride indeed loads of extras and just what I needed to pull my Horse Trailer. Very quite running for a Deisel, best Big Truck Ive owned Runs and drives as good as it looks, Alot of car for the money
Excellent value for money with so many extras comfort and punchy this car is no slouch and will climb mountains when required steady and sturdy unbreakable with a remarkable 3.0 l Merc engine give good mpg for its size
This car is a SP{ORT Utility Vehicle , 0-60 in 5 seconds, top speed 160mph. Has every bell and whistle. I am compering this with my 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.7litre. Immaculate condition and a good price.
