Jeep Grand Cherokee Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfy on the road, capable off it	It's hugely expensive
High quality interior	No seven-seater option
Lots of technology on board	European rivals do most things a little better

Quick Summary

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is America's answer to the Range Rover Sport, offering a large SUV designed to be comfortable, refined and sophisticated on the road whilst remaining virtually unstoppable off it. This fifth-generation model represents a significant improvement over its predecessors, delivering impressive on-road dynamic polish, high-quality interior appointments and cutting-edge technology. Available exclusively in the UK with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, it combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric motors to produce 380 metric horsepower and 462lb ft of torque, capable of 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. The spacious 580-litre boot, generous rear legroom and sophisticated four-wheel-drive system with multiple driving modes make it genuinely practical for families and adventurers alike.

Running costs are a significant consideration, with prices starting around £72,000 and rising to £86,000, though used examples offer better value. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain can deliver low running costs if used correctly, with up to 31 miles of electric-only range on a full charge. Quadra-lift air suspension with adaptive damping on higher trims ensures a smooth, controlled ride, whilst the steering is responsive and accurate despite the car's considerable size. However, potential buyers should be aware that European rivals often deliver superior handling and value, and the Grand Cherokee's depreciation may be heavier than Land Rover counterparts.

Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, spacious SUV with genuine off-road capability, those wanting a plug-in hybrid option, and drivers prioritising comfort and technology over sharp handling.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring seven seats, or drivers seeking the finest handling dynamics or best resale value in the premium SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Grand Cherokee if: You seek a luxurious, spacious SUV with genuine off-road capability, want a plug-in hybrid option, or prioritise comfort and technology over sharp handling.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, require seven seats, or seek the finest handling dynamics or best resale value in the premium SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a compelling proposition that has closed the gap on European rivals significantly. Whilst it may not match the Land Rover Defender's off-road heritage or the Range Rover Sport's dynamic refinement, it offers a unique blend of American comfort, sophisticated technology and genuine capability. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain provides an interesting alternative to traditional petrol or diesel powertrains, though running costs remain substantial. For buyers willing to invest in a distinctive, well-equipped luxury SUV with impressive practicality and off-road credentials, the Grand Cherokee represents a credible choice, though European alternatives often deliver superior value and resale prospects.
