Kia Niro (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy for passengers | Small boot on PHEV |
| Low running costs | Dull to drive |
| PHEV or standard hybrid options | Lacks polish of e-Niro |
Quick Summary
The Kia Niro (2016-2022) is a small SUV unique for its exclusively electrified powertrains, offering both 'self-charging' hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. Launched in 2016, it carved a niche by not offering conventional petrol or diesel engines, competing against a wide range of SUVs and hybrids. While its interior styling is conservative, build quality is good, and it offers reasonable space for four adults, though the middle rear seat is tight. Boot capacity is 373 litres for the hybrid and 324 litres for the PHEV, with folding rear seats for larger items.
Driving is adequate for urban use, but the Niro isn't particularly sprightly for motorway speeds or overtaking due to its weight, which also impacts handling, especially in the heavier PHEV. Despite light steering lacking feedback, both versions are comfortable. Running costs are a strong point; the PHEV boasts impressive official figures if charged regularly, while the standard hybrid can achieve around 58.9mpg officially, translating to 45mpg on motorways and over 50mpg in town. Insurance groups are low (11-15), and Kia's seven-year warranty and reasonable servicing costs further enhance its appeal.
Best for: Drivers seeking an economical, practical small SUV with electrified powertrains, those prioritising reliability and a long warranty, or those who can regularly charge a PHEV for optimal running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, class-leading boot space (especially PHEV), or a chic, premium interior feel.

The Verdict
You should buy the Niro if: You're looking for an economical and practical small SUV with electrified powertrains, value Kia's reputation for reliability and its seven-year warranty, or can consistently charge a PHEV to maximise fuel efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging driving experience, need class-leading boot space (especially from a PHEV), or prefer a more premium and stylish interior.
Competitive Position: The Kia Niro (2016-2022) offers a compelling package as a practical and economical small SUV, distinguished by its exclusively electrified powertrain options (hybrid and plug-in hybrid). While it may not excel in driving dynamics or interior flair compared to some rivals, its strong reliability record, industry-leading seven-year warranty, and low running costs (especially for a well-utilised PHEV) make it a sensible choice for budget-conscious and environmentally aware buyers. It stands out for its unique powertrain strategy in the segment.

4.3 Overall rating
(7 reviews)This car is a very comfortable ride, very little noise whether its in ev or hev. Spec is very good on this model and is quite economical to run. My insurance did go up quite a lot though from having a Nissan Qashqai before.
Excellent motor to drive, especially when in sport mode. Unfortunately it was missing floor mats and the satnav sd card , but it has android auto. Its very comfortable. I cant compare it to any other hybrid because its the first hybrid Ive ever driven, but I would highly recommend this model.
200 miles driving so far. Love it. Comfortable, smooth, easy to drive. Still learning extra features, they seem very well thought out, once you get your head round how to use them., but easy to drive without them. Downsides: I don’t like the boot latch, lovely radio with endless choice, but I can’t figure how to store and select favourites. My friend with same model claims 50mpg. But so far I have 46mpg. I think I got a good deal comparatively, but all cars are too very very ridiculously expensive.
Still getting use to the car. Really good and good performance.
Good car and I would love to have that car.
