Kia Niro (2016-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Roomy for passengers | Small boot on PHEV |
| Low running costs | Dull to drive |
| PHEV or standard hybrid options | Lacks polish of e-Niro |
Quick Summary
The Kia Niro (2016-2022) is a compact SUV with a unique approach to electrification, offering both self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains with no conventional petrol or diesel options. The hybrid model produces 139bhp and delivers reasonable fuel economy of around 45-58.9mpg in real-world driving, whilst the PHEV variant provides up to 30 miles of pure electric range for those with charging facilities. Both models feature front-wheel drive, a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and comfortable interiors with good passenger space, though the boot is modest at 373 litres for the hybrid and just 324 litres for the PHEV.
The Niro offers excellent value as a used buy, with low insurance groups (11-15 out of 50) and reasonable servicing costs. A facelift in 2019 introduced a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen on higher trims and improved infotainment systems across the range. Whilst the hybrid and PHEV models aren't particularly engaging to drive and lack the refinement of the electric e-Niro, they provide a practical, economical solution for buyers seeking an SUV with electrified powertrains. The PHEV's ability to function as a standard hybrid when the battery depletes offers flexibility, and Kia's reputation for reliability and seven-year warranty provide peace of mind.
Best for: Budget-conscious SUV buyers seeking low running costs, those with access to charging facilities (PHEV), families needing passenger space, and buyers valuing reliability and warranty coverage.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling, those seeking premium interior quality, buyers needing maximum boot space, or those without charging infrastructure for the PHEV model.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kia Niro | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |

| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 35.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Peugeot 3008 | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Niro if: You're seeking a budget-conscious SUV with low running costs, have access to charging facilities (PHEV), need good passenger space, or value reliability and warranty coverage.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, premium interior quality, maximum boot space, or lack charging infrastructure for the PHEV model.
Competitive Position: The Kia Niro (2016-2022) occupies a distinctive niche as the only compact SUV offering exclusively electrified powertrains during this period. Whilst the Skoda Karoq edges ahead with superior expert ratings and overall refinement, and the Peugeot 3008 offers more stylish design, the Niro delivers exceptional value and low running costs. The Toyota C-HR matches its overall rating but lacks the hybrid flexibility. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising economy and reliability over driving engagement, the Niro represents a sensible, practical choice with excellent user satisfaction and the security of Kia's seven-year warranty.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Car is good but I felt little over valued. Driving this car feels good and comfortable.
Value of car is good but I feel a little higher price. Features in car is very good than in lexus. Lexus with same Features will be more expensive than kia.
This car is a very comfortable ride, very little noise whether its in ev or hev. Spec is very good on this model and is quite economical to run. My insurance did go up quite a lot though from having a Nissan Qashqai before.
Excellent motor to drive, especially when in sport mode. Unfortunately it was missing floor mats and the satnav sd card , but it has android auto. Its very comfortable. I cant compare it to any other hybrid because its the first hybrid Ive ever driven, but I would highly recommend this model.
