Land Rover Defender (2020-Present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Combines utility and luxury | The three-door 90 has a tiny boot |
| Sophisticated and comfortable on the road | Expensive to buy and run |
| Superb to drive if you venture off-road | Land Rover's poor reputation for reliability might make you think twice |
Quick Summary
The all-new Land Rover Defender replaces one of history's most recognisable vehicles. It has evolved from a utilitarian machine into a sophisticated family car that blends peerless off-road capability with modern comforts, much like the original Discovery. Available in 90, 110, and 130 body styles, practicality varies significantly, from the 90’s city-car-sized boot to the 110's seven seats and the vast eight-seat 130, making it a rival to a wide range of SUVs from the Jeep Wrangler to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
On the road, the Defender is comfortable, quiet, and undemanding to drive, yet it remains formidably capable on any terrain thanks to features like air suspension and Terrain Response. Engine choices are broad, from efficient diesels and a plug-in hybrid to a powerful supercharged V8 in the performance-focused Octa model. Running costs are high, as expected of a premium vehicle, and while it's more usable than ever, Land Rover's wider reputation for reliability is a factor for potential buyers to consider.
Best for: Drivers seeking ultimate off-road ability without sacrificing on-road comfort, families needing the space of the 110 or 130 models, and buyers who desire a distinctive and characterful premium SUV.
Not ideal for: Those on a tight budget, anyone needing a large boot in the three-door 90 model, or buyers for whom proven reliability is the top priority.

The Verdict
You should buy the Defender if: You want a supremely capable off-roader that is also a comfortable, luxurious and characterful daily driver.
Consider alternatives if: Your budget is limited, you need a practical three-door vehicle, or you are concerned by Land Rover’s historical reliability record.
Competitive Position: The Land Rover Defender is a unique vehicle in the premium SUV market, offering a breadth of ability few rivals can match. It successfully combines iconic design and serious off-road credentials with the comfort and technology expected of a modern luxury car. While more expensive to buy and run than rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser or Jeep Wrangler, it offers a more sophisticated on-road experience, positioning it as a compelling, characterful alternative to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

(3 reviews)Cant compare land rover defender with any other vehicle. If youre not a land rover fan you wont ever love them
I think this car has a tough appearance, large enough space, and strong off-road performance, which is suitable for my Dai family to travel. I like it very much.
This is a very nice car. It is a slightly more basic model than some but it does what I need without the bells and whistles. As I’ve only just bought it it’s too early to give a full review but I like it and recommend it if you can afford one.
