Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Drives well on the road and off it	Reliability is not a strong point
Reasonably practical cabin	Unpopular front-wheel-drive model lacks the off-road ability of a proper Land Rover
The Freelander 2 is a very stable tow car	The 3.2-litre petrol is exceptionally thirsty

Quick Summary

The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) is a compact SUV that combines off-road capability with on-road refinement. Its smart, upmarket cabin accommodates four adults comfortably, though rear legroom is modest compared to rivals like the BMW X3. The 755-litre boot extends to 1,670 litres with seats folded, featuring a reversible waterproof cover. However, the boot is relatively narrow due to wheel arch intrusion, making wider item loading challenging. The Freelander 2 operates with front-wheel drive in normal conditions, with torque automatically distributed to the rear via a Haldex coupling as grip diminishes.

Initially powered by a 229bhp six-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.2-litre 158bhp turbodiesel, the range evolved significantly. By 2009, the petrol was dropped and the diesel gained stop-start technology. The 2010 facelift introduced a more powerful 187bhp SD4 turbodiesel variant. Despite its size and weight, the Freelander 2 is relaxing to drive with direct steering, comfortable ride quality, and good refinement. Whilst not agile, it handles back roads competently. Reliability concerns warrant a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist, though the turbodiesel engines are generally robust and economical, achieving around 40mpg in real-world driving.

Best for: Buyers seeking year-round mobility, off-road capability, and a stable tow car; those valuing refinement and smart styling in a compact SUV; and budget-conscious buyers seeking premium brand appeal.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising absolute reliability without specialist checks; those needing maximum rear legroom or boot width; or those seeking the finest on-road handling dynamics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Freelander 2 if: You seek year-round mobility and off-road capability, value refinement and smart styling, want a stable tow car, or are budget-conscious buyers seeking premium brand appeal.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise absolute reliability without specialist checks, need maximum rear legroom or boot width, or seek the finest on-road handling dynamics.

Competitive Position: The Land Rover Freelander 2 (2006-2014) offers genuine off-road prowess and on-road refinement at an attractive price point. Whilst reliability concerns require pre-purchase inspection by a specialist, its blend of capability, smart cabin, and stable towing characteristics make it compelling for adventure-minded buyers. However, rivals like the BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 offer superior reliability and handling, whilst the Audi Q5 provides better value for money. The Freelander 2 remains the best choice for those prioritising off-road ability and Land Rover heritage over premium refinement.
