MG3 (2013-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Nimble handling | Stiff and uncomfortable ride |
| Affordably priced | The interior feels cheap |
| Reasonably practical | Surprisingly expensive servicing |
Quick Summary
The MG3 is a budget-focused supermini that offers plenty of space and a sporty edge at an affordable price point. Owned by Chinese company SAIC, MG Motor has repositioned itself away from classic sports cars to deliver bargain-basement hatchbacks. The MG3 competes directly with the Dacia Sandero and Suzuki Swift rather than premium rivals like the Volkswagen Polo. Inside, you'll find reasonable headroom and legroom, plus a decent-sized boot, though the interior quality reflects the car's budget positioning with low-rent plastics and a clunky infotainment system. The 2018 facelift improved matters somewhat, but even newer examples feel cheap compared to mainstream rivals.
On the road, the MG3 feels dated, powered by an old-fashioned 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that lacks turbocharging and feels lethargic. The engine is noisy and vibration-prone, whilst the vague clutch and notchy five-speed gearbox make smooth driving difficult, particularly in town. The firm ride jostles over urban tarmac and potholes relentlessly, though this translates to nimble, fun handling in corners with quick steering response and good grip. Real-world fuel economy sits around 40mpg, lagging behind rivals, and servicing costs are surprisingly expensive. However, the timing chain should last the car's lifetime. Depreciation is steep due to low second-hand demand, so you may lose more cash overall than buying a more expensive rival.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking maximum space and a sporty driving feel, those wanting a long warranty, and drivers prioritising affordability above all else.
Not ideal for: Those seeking premium interior quality, a comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy, or strong resale value, or buyers wanting a refined, modern driving experience.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG3 | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 22.7% | 4.0/5 |
| Kia Rio | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.1% | 4.1/5 |

| Suzuki Swift | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 30.2% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the MG3 if: You're on a tight budget, need maximum interior space, want a sporty driving feel, or require a long warranty on a new car.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, a comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy, strong resale value, or a refined, modern driving experience.
Competitive Position: The MG3 is the cheapest option in this segment, but you get what you pay for. Whilst it offers nimble handling and reasonable practicality, the dated engine, uncomfortable ride, cheap interior, and expensive servicing costs make it less compelling than rivals. The Dacia Sandero and Suzuki Swift offer better user ratings and value scores, whilst the Kia Rio provides a more refined alternative. Unless budget is your absolute priority and you're buying new for the warranty, spending slightly more on a competitor will likely prove more satisfying and better value long-term.

(3 reviews)Happy for a car that is chap to insure And a pleasure to drive
Good car well screwed together. 1500cc engine runs well reasonably economic. Wish it could have had a 6speed box and perhaps a turbo .Overall a nice car and well worth considering.
The features in the car were fine but I didnt like the driving position. The car was reasonably well equipped but it was very low to the floor. The steering was a bit loose and if was to purchase a MG I think I would opt for the larger model ZS. Not for me but you may like it
