The MINI remains one of the most alluring hatchbacks on sale. The current F56 model, which is a popular used buy, arrived in early 2014 and is bigger than its predecessor, with an new platform and engine range. A five-door version followed, offering improved rear legroom and boot space compared to the notoriously cramped three-door. The Convertible features a powered fabric hood opening in 18 seconds, whilst the engine line-up includes turbocharged petrol units ranging from 134bhp in the Cooper to 302bhp in the John Cooper Works, plus an all-electric option since 2019 and frugal diesel engines for second-hand buyers.

The current MINI is the most grown-up version yet, being physically larger and more practical than its predecessors. However, rear seats remain tight in the three-door, and the boot isn't huge. The five-door model is considerably more spacious inside and out, making it more bearable for adults. All models display the brand's famous go-kart-like agility with quick steering, firm suspension and perky engines, whilst maintaining a reasonably comfortable ride and pleasingly low noise levels. The MINI Electric captures the same sense of fun with alert steering and lively performance from its electric motor. Running costs vary significantly depending on the powertrain; the Electric is cheapest to run at around £10-£15 to charge at home, whilst diesel models achieve 70mpg and petrol variants no more than 35mpg.
