Mercedes-Benz EQC (2019-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Relaxed and comfortable to drive	High insurance premiums
Strong performance and low running costs	Not as enjoyable to drive as some rivals
Spacious and practical	Other EVs can recharge more quickly

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz EQC is the German brand's first dedicated electric SUV, designed to rival premium electric vehicles such as the Audi E-tron, Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X. Powered by a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system and an 80kWh lithium-ion battery, it delivers a combined 402bhp and an official WLTP range of up to 254 miles, though real-world range is typically lower, especially in cold weather or on motorway journeys. The EQC supports both AC home charging and DC rapid charging, with a maximum DC charging speed of up to 110kW, allowing a 10-80 percent charge in around 40 minutes on a suitable rapid charger.

The EQC excels in comfort and refinement rather than outright sportiness. Its spacious 500-litre boot, generous rear passenger room and premium interior make it particularly well suited to long-distance driving. Ride quality is excellent, whilst wind and road noise are impressively suppressed at motorway speeds. The premium cabin features Mercedes-Benz's widescreen MBUX infotainment system with excellent material quality and generous standard equipment. Running costs are considerably cheaper than equivalent petrol or diesel SUVs, especially with home charging on an off-peak tariff, though insurance premiums are high and real-world range is modest compared with newer rivals.

Best for: Buyers seeking a relaxed, comfortable and luxurious electric SUV for long-distance driving, those prioritising refinement and premium feel, and drivers with access to home charging facilities.

Not ideal for: Those wanting a sharp, engaging driving experience, buyers requiring rapid charging speeds comparable to newer EVs, or those concerned about high insurance and maintenance costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the EQC if: You seek a relaxed, comfortable and luxurious electric SUV for long-distance driving, prioritise refinement and premium feel, and have access to home charging facilities.

Consider alternatives if: You want a sharp, engaging driving experience, require rapid charging speeds comparable to newer EVs, or are concerned about high insurance and maintenance costs.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz EQC remains an impressively refined and luxurious electric SUV that excels in comfort and long-distance capability. Whilst it's not the sharpest electric SUV to drive and its real-world range looks modest compared with newer rivals, it remains a more relaxing and comfortable vehicle than some sportier alternatives. Heavy depreciation has made the EQC surprisingly good value on the used market, positioning it competitively against the Tesla Model X and Audi E-tron, though the Jaguar I-Pace offers a more engaging driving experience for those prioritising handling over comfort.
