Mercedes-Benz EQC (2019-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Relaxed and comfortable to drive	High insurance premiums
Strong performance and low running costs	Not as enjoyable to drive as some rivals
Spacious and practical	Other EVs can recharge more quickly

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz EQC was the German brand's first dedicated electric SUV, designed to rival premium electric alternatives such as the Audi E-tron, Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X. It combines near-silent electric performance with the comfort and refinement expected from Mercedes-Benz. The UK model uses a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system powered by an 80kWh lithium-ion battery, offering an official WLTP range of up to 254 miles, though real-world figures are typically lower, especially in cold weather or on motorways. Charging via a 7.4kW home wallbox takes approximately 11 hours for a full charge, whilst DC rapid charging can achieve 10-80 percent in around 40 minutes.

The EQC is spacious and practical, with a 500-litre boot expanding to 1,460 litres with rear seats folded. Its real strength lies in comfort and refinement rather than sportiness, delivering an excellent ride quality and impressive noise suppression at motorway speeds. The 402bhp dual-motor setup provides strong performance and effortless acceleration, whilst the four-wheel-drive system offers excellent traction. Running costs are considerably cheaper than equivalent petrol or diesel SUVs, particularly with home charging on off-peak tariffs. Heavy depreciation has made the EQC surprisingly good value on the used market, though insurance costs remain high and replacement tyres can be expensive.

Best for: Buyers seeking a relaxed, comfortable and refined electric SUV for long-distance driving, those prioritising low running costs and premium interior quality, and drivers with access to home charging facilities.

Not ideal for: Those wanting a sharp, engaging driving experience, buyers concerned about charging speed compared with newer rivals, or those seeking the lowest insurance premiums in the electric SUV segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the EQC if: You seek a relaxed, comfortable and refined electric SUV for long-distance driving, prioritise low running costs and premium interior quality, or have access to home charging facilities.

Consider alternatives if: You want a sharp, engaging driving experience, are concerned about charging speed compared with newer rivals, or seek the lowest insurance premiums in the electric SUV segment.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz EQC remains an impressively refined and luxurious electric SUV that excels in comfort and refinement. Whilst it's not the sharpest electric SUV to drive and its real-world range now looks modest compared with newer rivals, it remains a more relaxing and comfortable vehicle than some sportier alternatives. Heavy depreciation has made the EQC surprisingly good value on the used market, positioning it competitively against the Tesla Model X and Audi E-tron, though the Jaguar I-Pace offers a more engaging driving experience for those prioritising handling over comfort.
