Mercedes-Benz GLE Class (2018-2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Luxurious cabin	Not as sporty as a BMW X5
Air suspension delivers supreme comfort	Audi offers more robust-feeling interiors
Plug-in hybrid versions sip fuel	Poor performance in reliability surveys

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Class is a large, premium SUV that prioritises comfort and luxury over sporting dynamics. Available as either a five- or seven-seat SUV or a sportier two-row Coupe variant, it offers a beautifully designed interior with high-quality materials and abundant space for passengers and luggage. The second-generation model, introduced in 2018 and refreshed in 2026, competes directly with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Land Rover Discovery. With a range of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, there's a GLE to suit various driving needs and budgets, from the efficient 300d to the supercar-rivalling AMG 63 S.

The GLE excels at delivering a refined, wafting driving experience, particularly with air suspension fitted to higher trims. Whilst it may feel heavy on twisty roads compared to a BMW, its light steering makes it remarkably easy to manoeuvre in town. Plug-in hybrid models offer impressive electric range of up to 67 miles, making them ideal for urban commuting when charged regularly. Running costs vary significantly by model; conventional diesels achieve 33-41mpg, whilst plug-in hybrids claim 74-128mpg on paper. Insurance groups start at 44 for base models, rising to the maximum for AMG variants. For those seeking a refined, luxurious family cruiser with genuine presence, the GLE delivers in abundance.

Best for: Buyers seeking a refined, luxurious large SUV, families requiring spacious seating and boot capacity, and those wanting plug-in hybrid efficiency for urban driving.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling, those seeking the most robust-feeling interior, or buyers concerned about reliability records.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the GLE if: You're seeking a refined, luxurious large SUV, require spacious seating and boot capacity for families, or want plug-in hybrid efficiency for urban commuting.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling, desire the most robust-feeling interior, or have concerns about reliability records.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz GLE Class is a strong contender in the premium large SUV market, offering exceptional luxury, comfort, and a comprehensive range of powertrains. Whilst the BMW X5 edges ahead for sportiness and the Audi Q7 for interior robustness and user satisfaction, the GLE's refined driving experience, beautiful design, and plug-in hybrid efficiency make it a compelling choice. The Land Rover Discovery offers similar practicality at comparable pricing. For buyers prioritising comfort and prestige over outright handling, the GLE remains a front-running option in its class.
