Quick Summary
The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) is the renamed third-generation SLK, a stylish roadster with an innovative folding hardtop. Launched in 1996, the SLK became renowned for offering a dash of glamour at a more affordable cost than the larger SL. The 2016 rebranding brought minor updates, including a new steering wheel and styling tweaks, though the SLC remains fundamentally similar to its predecessor. The Final Edition models now available feature sporty bodykits, electric part-leather seats, metallic paint, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and satnav as standard, with Premium variants adding LED headlamps, a reversing camera, and a glass roof.
However, the SLC's driving experience is distinctly laid-back, lacking the engagement of its rivals. The interior feels cramped for taller drivers, and the hardtop reduces boot practicality when lowered. At low speeds, the car jolts across uneven surfaces, whilst the heavy, numb steering and body lean through corners diminish enjoyment. The 2.0-litre engines—181bhp SLC 200 and 242bhp SLC 300—offer decent performance but deliver reedy, synthetic engine notes. Fuel economy of 30-35mpg is unimpressive compared to rivals, and Mercedes servicing costs are expensive with no discounted menu pricing after three years. The SLC's saving grace is strong value retention, though reliability data from the earlier SLK suggests below-average dependability for the class.
Best for: Buyers prioritising style and the security of a folding metal roof, those seeking a glamorous convertible for leisurely driving, and those willing to accept compromises for badge prestige.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling, comfortable long-distance travel, spacious interiors, impressive fuel economy, or excellent value for money compared to rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz SLC | 2/5 | 4.0/5 | 31.8% | 3.7/5 |
| Audi TT Roadster | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 33.2% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW Z4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 29.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche 718 Boxster | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 41.6% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the SLC if: You prioritise style and the security of a folding metal roof, seek a glamorous convertible for leisurely driving, or value Mercedes badge prestige over dynamic handling.
Consider alternatives if: You demand engaging handling, comfortable long-distance travel, spacious interiors, impressive fuel economy, or excellent value compared to rivals.
Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz SLC (2016-2020) occupies an interesting position in the premium convertible market. Whilst it underperforms the Audi TT Roadster and BMW Z4 in expert ratings and user satisfaction, it offers strong value retention. However, the Porsche 718 Boxster is light years ahead in driving experience and represents superior value despite its higher purchase price. The SLC's appeal lies primarily in its glamorous styling and innovative folding hardtop rather than dynamic performance or practicality. For buyers willing to compromise on engagement and comfort for badge prestige and distinctive looks, it remains a viable choice, though rivals offer better overall packages.

4 Overall rating
(7 reviews)More stylish than the Audi TT, better appointed than the BMW Z4, roomier than the MX5 In diesel form, still rapid and economical.
My overall impression of the SLC model that I bought, is totally stunning in evey wa.y. It has a plethora of very expensive extras. It is a fast luxurious, classy and elegant motor car.
Automatic roof makes it a winner technically dated poor sat nav
This is a basic version of the car - no cruise, no electric seats etc that I’d expect of buying a car in this class so this distracts fr the feeling of luxury. The test drive route was lame and so I can’t really comment on the car’s performance much It pulled away easily, gear transition was smooth and responsive. I liked it enough to make arrangements to test drive in another area so I can put the car through its paces a bit more. I’m comparing it to the M420, Z4, TT and A5
no sat nav or parking sensors, found same car with the extras for same price
