Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Premium badge and strong business image	More expensive than many rivals
Excellent safety and driver assistance kit	eSprinter won't suit every operator
Huge range of bodies, drivetrains and conversions	So much choice makes careful configuration essential

Quick Summary

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (2019-present) is a premium large van combining heavy-duty practicality with an upmarket image. Available as a panel van in three lengths and two roof heights, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options, it offers exceptional configurability for specialist uses including chassis cab and crew cab derivatives. The fully electric eSprinter provides up to 272 miles of range with rapid DC charging capability, making it suitable for urban deliveries and clean-air zones. The cab feels more substantial than many rivals, featuring Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system, comprehensive safety equipment and a comfortable driving position that makes this large van impressively easy to handle.

The Sprinter isn't the cheapest large van to buy, but strong residual values and a premium reputation help offset the higher purchase price. Diesel models remain the sensible choice for long-distance operators and heavy loads, with fuel economy ranging from 22.2mpg to 34.4mpg depending on specification. The eSprinter's lower charging costs and reduced maintenance requirements could make the sums work for many urban operators. Connected services and fleet-focused tools help keep the Sprinter working efficiently, whilst the breadth of available versions makes it feel like a properly configurable tool rather than just a big box on wheels.

Best for: Businesses prioritising premium image and brand reputation, operators requiring extensive configurability, those operating in clean-air zones (eSprinter), and fleets needing advanced safety and connectivity features.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking the cheapest large van option, operators with simple, straightforward requirements, or those unable to invest time in careful specification and configuration.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sprinter if: You prioritise premium brand image and reputation, require extensive configurability, operate in clean-air zones, or need advanced safety and connectivity features for your fleet.

Consider alternatives if: You're seeking the cheapest large van option, have straightforward requirements without need for extensive customisation, or prefer simpler specification choices.

Competitive Position: The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (2019-present) is a premium large van that stands apart from rivals through its upmarket image, comprehensive safety kit and exceptional configurability. Whilst competitors like the Vauxhall Vivaro, Renault Trafic and Ford Transit Custom offer better value and higher percentages of good deals, the Sprinter justifies its premium positioning through superior refinement, advanced technology and the prestige of the three-pointed star. It's not the default choice for budget-conscious operators, but for businesses willing to invest in quality and image, the Sprinter remains a compelling proposition that combines hard-working practicality with polished professionalism.
