Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2018-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of standard equipment	No plug-in hybrid or diesel
Sharp, coupé-like styling	Very small boot
Five-star Euro NCAP safety rating	High running costs

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2018-2020) is a stylish compact SUV that stands out from the crowd with its distinctive coupé-like design, featuring a sporty sloping rear and dramatic crease lines. Named after the original Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car, it offers a more upmarket interior than typical Mitsubishis, with generous standard equipment across all trim levels. However, it struggles to deliver the sporty drive its styling suggests, and practicality is compromised by a very tight 341-litre boot space—significantly smaller than key rivals like the Kia Sportage.

Powered solely by a 161bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the Eclipse Cross achieves 36.2-37.7mpg with the manual gearbox or 34.4mpg with the CVT automatic, making it less fuel-efficient than many competitors. The steering is sharp and body control is good, but the low-speed ride is firm and uncomfortable. Mitsubishi's decision to omit diesel and plug-in hybrid options limits appeal, particularly for high-mileage drivers. Despite Mitsubishi's reputation for reliability and the car's five-star Euro NCAP rating, the Eclipse Cross occupies a mid-pack position in the fiercely competitive compact SUV segment.

Best for: Buyers prioritising distinctive styling, generous standard equipment, and proven safety credentials, or those seeking a reliable compact SUV with an upmarket interior. Not ideal for: High-mileage drivers seeking fuel efficiency, those needing substantial boot space, or buyers wanting a rewarding driving experience or broader engine/powertrain options.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Eclipse Cross if: You prioritise distinctive styling, generous standard equipment, and proven safety credentials, or seek a reliable compact SUV with an upmarket interior. Consider alternatives if: You are a high-mileage driver seeking fuel efficiency, need substantial boot space, or require a rewarding driving experience with broader engine and powertrain options. Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2018-2020) occupies a mid-pack position in the competitive compact SUV segment. Whilst its distinctive coupé-like styling, generous standard equipment, and five-star Euro NCAP safety rating are genuine strengths, it struggles against rivals like the Skoda Karoq, Peugeot 3008, and Nissan Qashqai in key areas. The very small boot, limited engine choice, high running costs, and uncomfortable low-speed ride place it at a disadvantage. Most compact SUV buyers will find alternatives that better suit their needs, particularly those seeking practicality, fuel efficiency, or a more engaging driving experience.
