Peugeot 508 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Bold and attractive styling	Not as practical as some rivals
High-quality interior	The ride is too firm for some tastes
Plug-in hybrid is a great choice for company car drivers	BMW 3 Series is more enjoyable to drive

Quick Summary

The Peugeot 508 (2018-present) is a stylish family saloon and estate that boldly challenges the conservative design conventions of its segment. With its swooping Fastback hatchback profile and sleek SW estate variant, the 508 offers cutting-edge modern styling that rivals premium competitors like the Audi A5 Sportback. The 2023 facelift brought updated infotainment and refreshed styling to align with Peugeot's newer model range. Inside, quality materials create a pleasant environment, though the distinctive i-Cockpit layout with its small steering wheel and high-mounted instrument display takes some adjustment.

The 508 delivers engaging driving dynamics with direct steering, impressive grip, and a supple ride that makes it an excellent long-distance cruiser. Engine options span petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powerplants, with the later 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre diesel offering the best balance of performance and efficiency. The flagship PSE variant provides 335bhp of performance-oriented thrills. However, boot space is modest at 487 litres, and headroom is compromised by the sloping roofline. Running costs are reasonable, particularly with diesel or hybrid options, though the plug-in hybrid requires frequent charging to justify its premium price.

Best for: Style-conscious buyers seeking a premium-looking saloon or estate, company car users considering the plug-in hybrid, and those prioritising engaging handling and refinement over maximum practicality.

Not ideal for: Buyers needing maximum boot space, those preferring traditional steering wheel positioning, or drivers seeking the ultimate driving dynamics of a BMW 3 Series or Audi A4.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 508 if: You value striking styling and premium appeal, seek an engaging and refined driving experience, or are a company car user considering the plug-in hybrid option.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum boot space, prefer traditional steering wheel positioning, or demand the ultimate driving dynamics of premium German rivals.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot 508 stands out in the family saloon and estate market with its bold, contemporary styling and engaging driving dynamics. Whilst it doesn't quite match the Skoda Superb's practicality or the Ford Mondeo's overall refinement, the 508 offers a compelling alternative for buyers seeking style and character. The Volkswagen Arteon shares similar design ambitions, but the 508's plug-in hybrid option and lower running costs make it particularly attractive for company car drivers. With a strong value proposition and diverse engine range, the 508 represents an excellent choice for those willing to prioritise aesthetics and driving engagement over maximum space.
