Peugeot Traveller (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Massively roomy for a large family	Ordinary to drive
Up to eight seats rather than the usual seven of most large MPVs	Thirstier than a smaller, lighter SUV
Electric version has no exhaust emissions	The electric model has a short range

Quick Summary

The Peugeot Traveller (2016-present) is a practical eight-seat people carrier based on the commercial Expert van. Introduced in 2017 to replace the Expert Tepee, it offers exceptional versatility for families and active lifestyles. Available in standard and long-wheelbase versions, the Traveller provides up to 4,554 litres of boot space with seats removed. Sliding doors on both sides, individual second and third-row seats, and family-friendly features like child observation mirrors and retractable blinds make it genuinely useful. The cabin is refined, particularly in Allure trim with acoustic glass, though it's not engaging to drive.

Diesel engines range from a 120bhp 1.5-litre BlueHDI to a 180bhp 2.0-litre HDI, with manual or automatic transmissions available. An electric e-Traveller with a 50kWh battery offers emissions-free motoring for up to 148 miles, though from mid-2022 this is the only new model available due to EU emissions regulations. Fuel economy ranges from 36.2-46.5mpg depending on engine choice. Insurance groups are reasonable at 24-26E, though CO2 emissions of 167-205g/km place it at the upper VED tax rate. The Traveller is an honest, spacious tool for those needing to transport people and cargo regularly, though it lacks the driving engagement of conventional cars.

Best for: Large families, active lifestyles requiring flexible cargo space, those needing to transport groups regularly, and buyers seeking an alternative to traditional SUVs.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling, those seeking fuel economy comparable to smaller vehicles, or buyers with limited charging infrastructure for the e-Traveller.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Traveller if: You have a large family, lead an active lifestyle requiring flexible cargo space, need to transport groups regularly, or seek an alternative to traditional SUVs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, seek fuel economy comparable to smaller vehicles, or lack charging infrastructure for the e-Traveller.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot Traveller is a capable people carrier offering exceptional practicality and space for eight passengers. Whilst it undercuts premium rivals like the Volkswagen Multivan and Mercedes-Benz V-Class, it lacks the driving refinement and user ratings of competitors. The Citroën SpaceTourer offers similar practicality at a comparable price point, whilst the Ford Tourneo Custom provides superior driving dynamics. The Traveller's strength lies in its affordability and versatility, making it an honest choice for budget-conscious buyers needing maximum space. However, the transition to electric-only new models limits appeal for those requiring diesel range and practicality.
