Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |

| Stylish interior | Some expensive potential problems |
Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 is Porsche's entry-level sports car and a two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible powered by a classic flat-six engine. It made owning a Porsche far more accessible than ever before, and remains one of the most affordable Porsches to buy second-hand. Known among enthusiasts as the 986 after its development code, the first-generation Boxster is one of the best performance-car bargains available, delivering exhilarating driving pleasure and the cachet of one of motoring's most revered badges.
The Boxster is surprisingly practical for a two-seater sports car, with two boots providing adequate storage for weekly shopping or weekend luggage. The cockpit offers sufficient space and seat adjustment for most occupants, though those made before 2003 lack a glove compartment. Driving dynamics are exceptional—crisp steering, beautifully balanced chassis, and a rasping engine create an immensely satisfying experience. However, maintenance costs are steep due to specialist servicing and expensive parts. A well-maintained example with a fully stamped service book is essential, as neglected Boxsters become costly to repair. The metal timing chain is a cost-saving advantage over competitors.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking serious performance on a modest budget, those who appreciate precision handling and classic Porsche engineering, and buyers willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising low running costs, buyers uncomfortable with high servicing expenses, or those seeking a four-seat convertible alternative.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking serious performance on a modest budget, appreciate precision handling and classic Porsche engineering, and are willing to invest in proper maintenance.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise low running costs, are uncomfortable with high servicing expenses, or require a four-seat convertible alternative.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) stands out as an exceptional driver's car, offering exquisite handling and the prestige of the Porsche badge at an accessible price point. Whilst the TVR Chimaera offers raw character and the Nissan 370Z provides modern performance, neither matches the Boxster's refined driving dynamics or build quality. However, potential buyers must accept that maintenance costs are significantly higher than rivals, and finding a well-maintained example is crucial. For those willing to navigate these considerations, the Boxster delivers unparalleled driving pleasure and modern classic appeal.

(7 reviews)Pure magic! A super car that is too amazing to be true!
What a great car, the power ratio is insane and handles really well
A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.
A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.
Great car, handles well, comfortable, sounds awesome & can really shift
