Renault Captur (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Practical cabin with its clever sliding rear bench | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma |
| Frugal hybrid model | Elements of interior build quality could be better |
| Excellent Google-based touchscreen system | Poor quality reversing camera |
Quick Summary
The Renault Captur (2020-present) is a stylish and practical compact crossover that builds on the success of its predecessor. Based on the Clio hatchback, it offers more substantial styling, greater interior space, and an elevated driving position compared to traditional superminis. The neatly designed cabin features a clever sliding rear bench that allows you to trade rear legroom for extra boot space, with petrol models offering 444 litres of storage (1,275 litres with rear seats down). The 2024 facelift introduced a redesigned front end and an updated Google-backed infotainment system with a 10.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Engine options include a 1.0-litre TCe 90 petrol with 90bhp and a frugal E-Tech Hybrid combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, delivering 145bhp and achieving claimed 60mpg. The Captur rides comfortably, grips well, and is civilised on the motorway, though it's less engaging than the Ford Puma. Running costs are low, with generous standard equipment across all trims including climate control and alloy wheels. As a used model, the Captur represents excellent value in the competitive compact crossover segment, particularly if you prioritise practicality and efficiency over outright driving thrills.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish and practical compact crossover, those wanting a frugal hybrid option, and families prioritising interior space and clever storage solutions.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting the most engaging driving experience, those requiring premium interior build quality throughout, or buyers needing a high-quality reversing camera.

The Verdict
You should buy the Captur if: You're seeking a stylish and practical compact crossover, want a frugal hybrid option, or prioritise interior space and clever storage solutions.
Consider alternatives if: You want the most engaging driving experience, require premium interior build quality throughout, or need a high-quality reversing camera.
Competitive Position: The Renault Captur (2020-present) is a strong contender in the compact crossover market, offering excellent practicality, a frugal hybrid option, and an outstanding Google-based infotainment system. Whilst the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq offer more engaging driving dynamics and the Kia Stonic provides a better warranty, the Captur's clever sliding rear bench, generous equipment levels, and attractive styling make it a compelling choice for buyers prioritising practicality and value. It represents excellent value as a used model, particularly for families and those seeking an efficient hybrid powertrain.

4.5 Overall rating
(23 reviews)Customers say
The Renault Captur has generally won over drivers with its spaciousness, comfort, and impressive technology features. Many appreciate the comfortable driving experience and spacious boot space, which enhances its practicality. On the downside, some have pointed out the lack of certain features, such as an electronic parking brake, heated seats, and sufficient interior storage. Overall, the Captur serves as a good value option in the compact SUV segment, but drivers have shown a desire for more standout qualities and reliability in some earlier models.

What people say
The car was fine to drive. Adjustable steering wheel position and driver's seat height. Easy to start and drive off. Good visibility, though roof was a bit low when sitting in a high position. Engine was responsive and smooth, with seamless transition between electric battery and petrol engine. Plenty of leg room in the back and boot was spacious, with another storage space underneath. The side mirrors were rather small for a car of this size. Compares favourably with Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro and Toyota Yaris Cross. I might have bought this car had it not been for the pushy attitude of the salesman (Car Planet, Watford) and the derisory offer on the part exchange of our car. Also, the car was very dusty and had obviously not been washed ahead of our visit.
Well finished attractive car really nice drive, small engine great pull.
This is my 2nd Renault Captur. My other is now 9 years old, so I'm really loving all the updated features.
