Renault Captur Mk1 (2013-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Attractive styling	Not very engaging to drive
Practical for such a small car	Some question marks over reliability
Smooth ride	Could be better finished inside

Quick Summary

The Renault Captur Mk1 (2013-2019) is a small SUV that combines the practicality of a hatchback with the elevated driving position and style of an SUV. Based on the Clio platform, it offers impressive versatility with flexible rear seating that allows you to prioritise between passenger legroom and boot space, providing between 377 and 455 litres of boot capacity. The car is exceptionally roomy for its class, with excellent storage solutions throughout, making it ideal for families seeking a practical and attractive vehicle without the bulk of a larger SUV.

The Captur prioritises comfort over driving engagement, with a suspension setup that isolates occupants from poor road surfaces and delivers a serene driving experience. Engine options include a 0.9-litre TCe 90 petrol for town driving, a 1.2-litre TCe 120 for longer journeys, and diesel alternatives (1.5 dCi 90 and dCi 110) that offer better fuel economy and lower-end torque. Most used examples feature manual gearboxes, though automatics are available. Running costs are reasonable, with diesel models achieving up to 78.5mpg and VED-free status, whilst insurance sits in reasonable groups 9-16. Servicing is straightforward, though cambelt replacement every six years or 90,000 miles should be factored in.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, comfortable, and stylish small SUV with excellent interior space, those prioritising ride comfort over driving dynamics, and budget-conscious buyers wanting SUV appeal without premium pricing.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling or a more premium interior finish, or those concerned about potential reliability issues without comprehensive service history.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Captur if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable, and stylish small SUV with excellent interior space, prioritise ride comfort over driving dynamics, or want SUV appeal without premium pricing.

Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging handling, a more premium interior finish, or have concerns about reliability without comprehensive service history.

Competitive Position: The Renault Captur Mk1 is one of the best all-round small SUVs available on the used market, offering exceptional practicality and comfort at a competitive price. It outperforms the Vauxhall Mokka in expert ratings and matches the Peugeot 2008 and Nissan Juke for overall appeal. Whilst it may not deliver the engaging driving dynamics of some rivals, its attractive styling, spacious interior, smooth ride, and reasonable running costs make it an excellent choice for families and practical buyers. Early models offer better value than facelifted versions, though ensuring comprehensive service history is essential given reliability considerations.
