Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Low running costs	Not as adventurous-looking as SUV rivals
Better packaging than an equivalent SUV	Third-row space not the biggest
Eye-catching looks for an MPV	Storage better in previous Scenics

Quick Summary

The Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) is a stylish seven-seat MPV that offers exceptional value as a used purchase. Despite falling out of favour with new car buyers as SUVs rose in popularity, the Grand Scenic remains a practical family car with impressive interior space and light, airy cabin design. It features a comfortable driving position, excellent storage throughout, and a choice of efficient petrol and diesel engines, including an early mild-hybrid diesel option that delivers around 60mpg.

Running costs are remarkably affordable, with low fuel consumption and competitive insurance groups. The Grand Scenic is best considered a five-seater with emergency capacity for two additional passengers, as the third row offers limited head and legroom. Well-equipped across the range with R-Link2 infotainment, colour head-up display on higher trims, and comprehensive safety features, it represents outstanding value for budget-conscious families seeking practicality over driving excitement. The 2018 facelift introduced Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, plus standard parking sensors on entry-level models.

Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking practical seven-seat transport, those prioritising low running costs and affordability, and buyers wanting better interior space than equivalent SUVs.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking SUV styling, those requiring genuine three-row seating with adequate legroom, or enthusiasts wanting engaging driving dynamics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Grand Scenic if: You're seeking affordable family transport with excellent practicality, prioritising low running costs and interior space over driving dynamics or premium badge appeal.

Consider alternatives if: You require genuine three-row seating with adequate legroom, prefer SUV styling, or want a more engaging driving experience.

Competitive Position: The Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) stands out as an exceptional value proposition in the used seven-seat MPV market. With the highest user rating (5.0/5) and the best percentage of good/great deals (34.9%), it outperforms key rivals on affordability and customer satisfaction. Whilst the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer achieves a marginally higher overall rating (4.4/5), the Grand Scenic's superior user feedback and deal availability make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious families. Its low running costs, practical interior, and stylish design combine to offer outstanding value, particularly when compared to more expensive SUV alternatives offering less interior space.
