Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Low running costs | Not as adventurous-looking as SUV rivals |
| Better packaging than an equivalent SUV | Third-row space not the biggest |
| Eye-catching looks for an MPV | Storage better in previous Scenics |
Quick Summary
The Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) is a stylish mid-sized MPV that offers excellent value as a used purchase. Despite falling out of favour with new car buyers as SUVs rose in popularity, the Grand Scenic remains a practical and well-equipped family car. It seats seven, though the third row is best reserved for occasional use or children. The cabin features a light and airy feel with slim window pillars, comfortable front seats, and a decent middle row. Storage throughout is excellent, with large door bins, a sliding centre console, and hidden underfloor compartments. Boot space is tight with all seats upright but expands considerably when the rear seats fold into the floor.
Engine options range from 108bhp to 168bhp across petrol and diesel variants, with most fitted with manual gearboxes and some offering the EDC automatic. The standout is the Hybrid Assist diesel, one of the first seven-seat MPVs with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, achieving around 60mpg. Regular diesels deliver impressive economy in the low 50s to low 60s, whilst petrol engines typically achieve 40mpg or less in real-world driving. Insurance groups are reasonable, starting from group 12 for the basic petrol. The Grand Scenic may lack the driving dynamics of rivals like the Ford Grand C-Max, but it prioritises practicality and affordability, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious family buyers.
Best for: Budget-conscious families seeking a practical seven-seater, those prioritising low running costs and affordability, and buyers wanting better interior space than equivalent SUVs.
Not ideal for: Those seeking an adventurous SUV aesthetic, drivers wanting maximum third-row space, or buyers prioritising sharp driving dynamics.

The Verdict
You should buy the Grand Scenic if: You're a budget-conscious family seeking a practical seven-seater, prioritising low running costs and affordability, or wanting better interior space than equivalent SUVs.
Consider alternatives if: You seek an adventurous SUV aesthetic, require maximum third-row space, or prioritise sharp driving dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Renault Grand Scenic (2016-2020) is a strong contender in the used MPV market, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst it may not match the Volkswagen Touran or Vauxhall Zafira Tourer for user ratings, it delivers comparable expert ratings and represents outstanding value for money. The Grand Scenic's low running costs, well-equipped cabin, and stylish design make it an intelligent choice for families seeking affordability without sacrificing space. It offers better packaging than equivalent SUVs, though buyers should accept that the third row is best suited for occasional use or children.
