Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Better value than a VW Up | Interior not as posh as VW Up's |
| Fun yet comfortable to drive | Equipment can feel a little basic |
| Cheap to run | Limited performance |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is a practical, affordable city car that offers excellent value for money. Available in three- and five-door variants, it provides comfortable seating for four adults and a spacious 251-litre boot with folding rear seats. The car is renowned for being fun to drive, with light steering and gearshift action making it ideal for town driving. Safety features include a five-star Euro NCAP rating, six airbags, and optional autonomous emergency braking. Equipment varies by trim, with the base S model being spartan, whilst SE and Elegance trims offer air-conditioning, alloy wheels, and heated seats.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with fuel economy of 45-50 mpg and insurance groups between 2 and 4. Road tax is free for cars registered before 31 March 2017. The electric Citigo-e iV, launched in 2019, offers 161 miles of range and rapid charging capability, though used prices remain high. The petrol Citigo is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine available in 59bhp or 74bhp variants, with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. An automatic ASG option is available but best avoided due to clunky gear changes.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a fun, practical, and economical city car; those wanting low running costs and excellent value; drivers interested in an affordable small electric vehicle (Citigo-e iV).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior quality like the VW Up; those needing high performance; drivers requiring an automatic transmission with smooth gear changes.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Skoda Citigo | 5/5 | 4.2/5 | 31.2% | 4.3/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Citigo if: You're seeking a budget-friendly, fun, and practical city car with low running costs, or interested in an affordable small electric vehicle option.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior quality, require high performance, or need a smooth automatic transmission.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Citigo (2012-2020) is one of the best small cars available on the used market, offering exceptional value for money. Whilst the Toyota Aygo may have higher user ratings and better deal availability, and the Hyundai i10 and Toyota Yaris offer slightly higher overall CarGurus ratings, the Citigo stands out for its combination of affordability, practicality, and driving enjoyment. It's cheaper than the VW Up and Seat Mii whilst offering comparable quality and reliability. The electric Citigo-e iV represents an exciting option for those seeking an affordable small EV, though used prices remain elevated. For budget-conscious buyers wanting a fun, comfortable, and economical city car, the Citigo remains an excellent choice.

The Skoda Citigo is well-regarded for its value, ease of driving, and comfort, making it ideal for new drivers. Owners like its spacious feel despite its compact size and commend its fuel efficiency. Fantastic little car. Very nippy and a pleasure to drive. Holds the road really well. Excellent value for money.
