Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very roomy for a small SUV	Not as much fun as a Ford Puma
Good value for money	There's no fuel-sipping hybrid model
Comfortable to travel in and appealing to drive	Lacks the sliding rear seats of some rivals

Quick Summary

The Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) is a compact crossover that combines the practicality of an SUV with the efficiency of a supermini. Launched in 2019 as a smaller alternative to Skoda's Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq has received almost universally positive critical reception. It offers surprising interior space for its size, with a 400-litre boot and comfortable rear seats that split and fold to juggle passenger and cargo space. The cabin is well-finished and plush compared to most small SUV rivals, though the driving position sits lower than typical SUVs.

Engine options include three petrol variants (94bhp, 114bhp, and 148bhp) and one diesel (114bhp 1.6-litre TDI), all delivering impressive fuel economy. The 114bhp petrol is the pick of the range for most buyers, whilst the diesel achieves 48.7-52.3mpg. All models are front-wheel drive with no 4x4 option. Insurance groups are competitive, starting from group eight, and servicing costs are kept low through Skoda's fixed-price maintenance plans. Whether buying new or used, the Kamiq represents excellent value with a well-equipped range and proven reliability.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, spacious, and affordable small SUV with excellent build quality and low running costs; buyers prioritising interior space and comfort over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Those wanting the engaging driving dynamics of a Ford Puma, drivers seeking a hybrid option, or buyers requiring sliding rear seats for maximum flexibility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Kamiq if: You're seeking a practical, spacious, and affordable small SUV with excellent build quality, low running costs, and a well-finished cabin; families prioritising comfort and interior space over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You want the engaging driving dynamics of a Ford Puma, require a hybrid option, or need sliding rear seats for maximum flexibility.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Kamiq stands at the top of the small SUV class, offering more interior space than most rivals and a well-finished cabin that matches or exceeds competitors like the Volkswagen T-Cross. Whilst the Ford Puma provides more engaging driving dynamics, the Kamiq's superior practicality, excellent value, and proven Skoda reliability make it an outstanding choice for families and commuters. It outperforms the Nissan Juke Mk2 in expert ratings and offers a more refined, spacious alternative to most compact crossovers on the market.
