Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very roomy for a small SUV | Not as much fun as a Ford Puma |
| Good value for money | There's no fuel-sipping hybrid model |
| Comfortable to travel in and appealing to drive | Lacks the sliding rear seats of some rivals |
Quick Summary
The Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) is a compact crossover that combines the practicality of a small SUV with the efficiency of a supermini-sized hatchback. Launched in 2019 as a smaller alternative to Skoda's Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq has received almost universally positive critical reception. It offers exceptional interior space for its class, with comfortable rear seats and a generous 400-litre boot, making it a highly serviceable family car. The cabin is well-finished and roomy, with a plush ride and excellent noise suppression, though the driving position sits surprisingly low for a crossover.
The Kamiq offers a choice of petrol or diesel engines, with the 114bhp 1.0-litre TSI petrol being the most popular and versatile option. All engines perform well and achieve impressive fuel economy, with the diesel returning 48.7-52.3mpg and the most economical petrol achieving 44.8-49.6mpg. Insurance groups are competitive, starting from group eight, and Skoda's reputation for reliability means you can buy with confidence. Whether purchasing new or used, the Kamiq represents excellent value, with generous equipment across most trim levels and low running costs.
Best for: Families seeking a practical, spacious, and affordable small SUV with excellent fuel economy and a well-finished interior; buyers prioritising comfort and value over driving excitement.
Not ideal for: Those wanting the most engaging driving experience (the Ford Puma is more fun), drivers requiring a high-up SUV seating position, or buyers seeking a hybrid powertrain option.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skoda Kamiq | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.0% | 4.6/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 36.1% | 4.6/5 |

| Volkswagen T-Cross | 4/5 | N/A | 35.0% | 4.0/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Kamiq if: You're seeking a practical, spacious, and affordable small SUV with excellent fuel economy, a well-finished interior, and low running costs, or prioritising comfort and value over driving excitement.
Consider alternatives if: You want the most engaging driving experience (the Ford Puma is more fun), require a high-up SUV seating position, or need a hybrid powertrain option.
Competitive Position: The Skoda Kamiq (2019-present) stands at the top of the small SUV class, matching the Ford Puma for overall excellence. It offers more interior space than most rivals, a well-finished cabin, and impressive fuel economy across all engine options. Whilst the Kamiq may not deliver the driving fun of the Ford Puma, it excels in practicality, comfort, and value. The Volkswagen T-Cross, despite its premium badge, offers no advantage in cabin quality, whilst the Nissan Juke lags behind in expert ratings. Whether buying new or used, the Kamiq represents an outstanding choice for families and those prioritising space and comfort.
