Skoda Karoq (2017-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very roomy and practical	Some issues with 1.5 petrol engine
Comfortable on the road	Slightly anonymous styling
Plenty of standard equipment	Some rivals are nicer to drive

Quick Summary

The Skoda Karoq is a dependable and talented small family SUV that has remained competitive nearly a decade after its launch. Launched in 2017 to fill the gap between the smaller Kamiq and larger Kodiaq, the Karoq offers the raised driving position SUV buyers enjoy with excellent practicality. Following a facelift in 2022 and further updates in 2024, it gained more standard equipment, new trim levels, and a revised 1.0-litre petrol engine option. The cabin is very well put together with plenty of storage, headroom, and legroom for tall adults in the back.

The Karoq drives well with neat handling and a composed ride, majoring on refinement and comfort rather than agility. Boot space is generous at 521 litres with standard seats, expanding to 588 litres with the optional Varioflex seating system, which offers three separate rear seats with a 40:20:40 split that can slide, fold, or be removed completely. Engine options include a 1.0-litre TSI petrol with 114bhp, a 1.5-litre TSI petrol with 148bhp, a 2.0-litre TSI petrol with 187bhp (4x4 only), and a 2.0-litre TDI diesel with 148bhp. Running costs are reasonable, with the 1.0-litre petrol achieving 46.4-48.8mpg and the diesel returning 44.7-49.3mpg depending on trim. Service intervals are annual or every 10,000 miles, with competitive pricing through Skoda's Standard, Plus, and All-In plans.

Best for: Families seeking a practical, comfortable, and well-equipped SUV with excellent space and plenty of standard features, and those prioritising value and reliability over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most engaging driving dynamics (Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-5 are better choices) or those preferring distinctive, eye-catching styling.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Karoq if: You're seeking a practical, comfortable, and well-equipped family SUV with excellent space and plenty of standard features, or prioritising value and reliability over driving excitement.

Consider alternatives if: You want the most engaging driving dynamics (Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-5 offer better handling) or prefer distinctive, eye-catching styling.

Competitive Position: The Skoda Karoq is a strong contender in the small family SUV market, offering exceptional practicality, comfort, and value. With a 5 out of 5 expert rating and 5.0 out of 5 user rating, it leads its rivals in customer satisfaction. Whilst the Nissan Qashqai edges ahead with a 4.7 user rating and the Ford Kuga offers superior driving dynamics, the Karoq's combination of spaciousness, standard equipment, and reasonable running costs makes it an excellent choice for families prioritising practicality and comfort. The optional Varioflex seating system further enhances its versatility, making it a great car to live with.
