Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Easy to drive around town | Plasticky cabin |
| Lively 1.2-litre engine | Very small boot |
| Cute and unusual looks | Noisy on a long drive |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) is a characterful and compact SUV that punches above its weight in terms of practicality and fun. Shorter than a MINI and almost as narrow as a Volkswagen Up, it's ideally suited to Britain's congested towns and cities. Despite its diminutive dimensions, the tall design provides comfortable seating for four adults, whilst the individually sliding rear seats offer versatile boot space ranging from 204 to 260 litres depending on configuration and drivetrain choice. The peppy 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers impressive performance around town, making parking and manoeuvring effortless thanks to the car's snub nose and flat tail end.
Running costs are a major strength, with fuel economy typically reaching 50mpg on the standard two-wheel-drive model, dropping to 40-45mpg with four-wheel drive or automatic transmission. The engine features a metal timing chain rather than a rubber belt, eliminating costly replacement expenses over the car's lifetime. Whilst the interior feels slightly plasticky in places and the infotainment system is fiddly, the Ignis compensates with low tax rates, affordable servicing costs, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity on most trims. The car's distinctive styling, referencing the classic Suzuki Whizzkid, ensures it stands out without appearing ostentatious.
Best for: Urban drivers seeking a fun, characterful, and affordable compact SUV with excellent manoeuvrability, budget-conscious buyers prioritising low running costs, and those wanting a left-field alternative to mainstream city cars.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a spacious boot, those planning frequent long motorway journeys, or those expecting premium cabin quality at this price point.

The Verdict
You should buy the Ignis if: You're an urban driver seeking a fun and characterful compact SUV, prioritising low running costs and excellent manoeuvrability, or looking for an affordable alternative to mainstream city cars.
Consider alternatives if: You require a spacious boot, plan frequent long motorway journeys, or expect premium cabin quality at this price point.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) is a distinctive contender in the budget compact SUV market, offering excellent value and urban practicality. Whilst the Dacia Duster edges ahead with a higher expert rating and more deals available, the Ignis compensates with superior manoeuvrability, distinctive styling, and comparable user satisfaction. It outperforms the Fiat Panda and MG ZS in terms of overall CarGurus rating and user feedback. The Ignis's real strength lies in its character and town-friendliness; it's the ideal choice for budget-conscious urban drivers who value personality and low running costs over spacious boots or premium interiors.

4.6 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Love the car. Has everything I wanted. AC/DAB radio/bluetooth/rear parking sensors/comfortable adjustable seating - very important for my back! /defrost settings for windows/ tyre pressure monitoring system and other things I’m sure that I haven’t noticed yet! Excellent value for money!
Excellent car, moves well, feel very secure. The only thing, especially when the car is new and it is at night time if their was some light where the media and the buttons below are - for me that is the only thing missing.
I love the 2019 Suzki Ingis. Its a fantastic small SUV. Everything you need for a city or country driving. Highly recommend serving at a Suzki garage too. Japan certainly know how to build a superb car.
I love the look, style and features of this car but my current car has similar features bigger engine and same mpg. Im still looking for the ideal car.
Nice to look at quite roomy nice layout but underpowered
