Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Easy to drive around town | Plasticky cabin |
| Lively 1.2-litre engine | Very small boot |
| Cute and unusual looks | Noisy on a long drive |
Quick Summary
The Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) is a characterful and compact SUV that excels in urban environments. Its diminutive dimensions—shorter than a MINI and nearly as narrow as a Volkswagen Up—make it ideally suited to Britain's congested towns and cities. Despite its small footprint, the tall design provides comfortable seating for four adults. The peppy 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers lively performance around town, whilst the snub nose and flat tail make parking and manoeuvring remarkably easy. Available in SZ3, SZ-T, and SZ5 trims, the Ignis offers versatile rear seating with individually sliding seats that can be adjusted to prioritise either passenger space or boot capacity.
Running costs are a genuine highlight, with fuel economy typically reaching 50mpg on the standard two-wheel-drive model, dropping to 40-45mpg with four-wheel drive or automatic transmission. The metal timing chain ensures long-term durability without costly belt replacements. Whilst the interior feels somewhat plasticky in places and the infotainment system is fiddly, the Ignis compensates with genuine charm, low tax costs, and affordable servicing. This is a fun, left-field choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a town-friendly car with personality and practicality.
Best for: Urban drivers seeking a characterful, easy-to-park compact SUV, budget-conscious buyers prioritising low running costs, and those wanting a fun, distinctive alternative to mainstream city cars.
Not ideal for: Buyers requiring a spacious boot, those planning frequent long motorway journeys, or those expecting premium cabin quality at this price point.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Ignis | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.1% | 4.1/5 |
| Dacia Duster | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |

| MG ZS | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.7% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Ignis if: You're an urban driver seeking a characterful, easy-to-park compact SUV, prioritising low running costs and fun over premium quality, or wanting a distinctive alternative to mainstream city cars.
Consider alternatives if: You require a spacious boot, plan frequent long motorway journeys, or expect premium cabin quality at this price point.
Competitive Position: The Suzuki Ignis (2016-present) is a distinctive choice in the budget compact SUV segment, offering genuine character and urban practicality. Whilst the Dacia Duster edges ahead on expert rating and value score, the Ignis compensates with superior handling around town, lively performance, and a more engaging driving experience. The Fiat Panda offers similar practicality but lacks the Ignis's SUV styling and character. The MG ZS provides more space but at the cost of the Ignis's nimbleness and charm. For budget-conscious buyers prioritising fun, personality, and town-friendly dimensions over sheer space, the Ignis remains an excellent and affordable choice.

4.6 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Love the car. Has everything I wanted. AC/DAB radio/bluetooth/rear parking sensors/comfortable adjustable seating - very important for my back! /defrost settings for windows/ tyre pressure monitoring system and other things I’m sure that I haven’t noticed yet! Excellent value for money!
Excellent car, moves well, feel very secure. The only thing, especially when the car is new and it is at night time if their was some light where the media and the buttons below are - for me that is the only thing missing.
I love the 2019 Suzki Ingis. Its a fantastic small SUV. Everything you need for a city or country driving. Highly recommend serving at a Suzki garage too. Japan certainly know how to build a superb car.
I love the look, style and features of this car but my current car has similar features bigger engine and same mpg. Im still looking for the ideal car.
Nice to look at quite roomy nice layout but underpowered
